The son of AFL legend Robert “Dipper” DiPierdomenico is set to contest charges he duped the wholesale golf company he worked at of more than $115,000.
The Herald Sun earlier revealed how Dylan DiPierdomenico was facing up to 10 years behind bars after being hit with 67 counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception.
Police allege he created a PayPal account to funnel money from dozens of customers into his bank account while employed at MGI Golf in Nunawading between July 10, 2018, and June 3, 2019.
The transactions varied from $38 to $5700, and, according to court documents, totalled $115,153.
Mr DiPierdomenico, 40, from Vermont, appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday — a year since he was charged — where his lawyer, Shae Holmes, said the main issue in the case is the quantum allegedly stolen.
She said there was a discrepancy of about $4000 in the prosecution brief of evidence of what her client is alleged to have transferred into his own account, versus what he has been charged with.
Ms Holmes successfully applied for the case to proceed to a committal hearing, where a magistrate would determine if there was sufficient evidence for Mr DiPierdomenico to stand trial in the County Court.
At the one-day contested hearing in July, she said she would question the forensic accountant assigned to analyse the transactions about how they reached the total figure.
She detailed how there was evidence of some transactions going back to the business.
“There were further amounts put back into the account,” Ms Holmes said.
Magistrate Donna Bakos remarked: “Whoever is prosecuting, better start doing the sums.”
Mr DiPierdomenico will return to court on July 12.
