A disgruntled passenger has destroyed an Uber during a bizarre road rage attack in Blackburn.
Video footage captured the passenger bashing the windows of the silver sedan with a hammer near Canterbury Rd about 7.30am on Thursday.
The passenger, who purchased the hammer during the trip, was seen grabbing the weapon out of the boot before shattering the glass windows multiple times.
Another man, believed to be the Uber driver, was seen filming the incident.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said the passenger, who appeared to be substance affected, was picked up from Carlton for an expected trip to Surrey Hills.
It’s understood the violent attack was over a dispute about payment.
A 42-year-old man has since been charged.
The man, of no fixed address, was charged with criminal damage, theft and driving offences.
He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 14 October.
An Uber spokesperson said the company strongly condemned criminal or violent activity.
“Our thoughts are with the driver-partner as he recovers from this traumatic incident,” they said.
“We are in contact with him, and have offered our support.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy towards any type of violent behaviour and users found to have breached this policy may have their access to the app permanently removed.”
The passenger, believed to be from Queensland, was barefoot and wore a striped jacket and black shorts.
He left the scene before police arrived.
The Uber driver was uninjured during the attack.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
