A man shot by police at Geelong on Friday had a history of run-ins with the law.

Cory Abbott remains in hospital after being wounded in a confrontation with officers and has not yet been charged.

Police were responding to reports of a carjacking in Norlane.

Grandfather Gary Bulmer, 75, had his Holden Commodore stolen in Iona St at about 3.40pm.

Mr Bulmer later said he was menaced with what appeared to be a homemade gun during the drama.

The Commodore was found about 30 minutes later in Warrawee Ave where detectives rammed it.

“Officers approached and were confronted by a man with a firearm who was subsequently shot by police,” officers said.

Abbott was wounded and taken by air ambulance to the Alfred Hospital.

The 37-year-old, who cannot read or write, was jailed in 2016 following a frightening six-hour crime spree where he stabbed a shop owner five times.

He had admitted to stabbing the Pakington St health store owner while trying to steal his laptop before knocking another man’s two front teeth out on November 5, 2015.

A short time later, a court heard Abbott, who was travelling on his BMX bike, broke into a North Geelong home and nabbed two flat screen televisions.

That night, at the Norlane home Abbott was staying at, he punched a visitor several times in the face, knocking his front teeth out.

He had been serving a community corrections order at the time.

Eight months later, he pleaded guilty to eight charges and was jailed for six years and three months.

Abbott has barely spent a full year out of prison in over 15 years, continuing to find himself on the wrong side of the law.

The County Court had been told that Abbott’s parents were both addicts and that he had been left to fend for himself from the age of 13.
