Cobram man David Eddy jailed as Mongols drug mule

A Cobram dad complained to his Mongols bosses that he was “bored and lonely” on a four-day drive to deliver drugs to Townsville.

Mayhem in the Mongols - Episode 1

A Victorian father has been jailed after the bikie-busting Echo taskforce uncovered he was a cross-border drug mule for the Mongols outlaw motorcycle gang.

A 13-month covert investigation resulted in the arrest of Cobram forklift driver David Eddy, 53, as he crossed back into Victoria in his “courier” vehicle after doing a drug run to the Gold Coast in July last year.

A search of his vehicle found $85,200 cash, a loaded .38-calibre revolver with ammunition and an encrypted mobile phone.

A subsequent raid on his home discovered a concealed compartment behind the fridge, which was opened by a suction grip handle, containing cocaine, vacuum sealed bags with white powder, zip lock bags and scales.

An imitation handgun was also located on the kitchen bench, a hydraulic press in the laundry and various other items used to package cocaine throughout the house.

Messages found on his phone indicated he was in direct contact with a Mongols sergeant at arms from the Echuca chapter, who was directing him to do runs interstate and to Melbourne.

They used encrypted apps, including Signal, WhatsApp and Wickr, to avoid police detection, and had code words like “luggage” and “jumper” when referring to drugs.

Police found $85,200 cash, a loaded revolver and an encrypted mobile phone in Eddy’s car.

They also called the void behind the fridge in Eddy’s house the “medicine cabinet”.

The details of Eddy’s involvement in the drug enterprise were revealed as he was sentenced in the County Court on Wednesday to three years imprisonment.

He will have to serve a minimum period of 22 months before he is eligible for parole.

The court heard he “acted as a courier at the behest” of the Mongols boss, and assisted the drug syndicate by packaging, storing and selling drugs from his home.

He did multiple trips to Townsville in far north Queensland, as well as the Gold Coast and Sydney, delivering both cash and drugs on behalf of the OMCG syndicate.

On one of the four-day drives to Townsville, Eddy complained to the bikie boss, who was running the drug ring, that he was “bored and lonely”.

On another occasion when he became confused about what his task was, Eddy rang him and he became angered as he feared his phone was being intercepted by police.

“Don’t ring me about the f---ing messages – message me about the messages when you can for your own sake and mine,” the bikie told him.

“Everything’s too f---ing hard for you to follow simple instructions.”

Eddy pleaded guilty to a series of offences, including trafficking in a drug of dependence, negligently dealing with proceeds of crime, and possessing an unregistered general category handgun.

County Court judge Daniel Holding said Eddy was motivated by financial and personal greed.

He said part of the reward involved receiving drugs for his own use, describing how Eddy had used drugs from the age of 14.

Eddy had also been rewarded by the syndicate with a night at Crown casino in Melbourne.

Judge Holding said Eddy’s guilty plea was “indicative of (his) remorse” but his involvement in drug trafficking was a “significant” offence.
