A TEENAGER has been charged with a brutal attack inside a maximum-security prison.

The 18-year-old is alleged to have left a staff member in hospital with severe facial injuries after he was slashed at Port Phillip Prison.

The Herald Sun revealed last month that a possible motivation for the incident was the attacker’s desire to join a violent jailhouse gang called G-Fam.

The teenager faces charges of intentionally causing serious injury and assaulting an emergency service worker.

He will appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 29.

The victim was taken to hospital after being slashed to the eye, neck and ear on July 20.

Police are believed to have taken CCTV from the prison at Truganina, in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Attacking a guard is a requirement for joining G-Fam.

The gang is an emerging force in the prison system and has been responsible for numerous attacks on staff and other inmates.

G-Fam members were responsible for the near-fatal bashing of Tony Mokbel at Barwon Prison in 2019.

In 2020, a guard was stabbed 10 times in an attack suspected of having links to G-Fam.
