Horror as two men dead after stabbing in Brunswick, Melbourne

A mother of five accused of severing her boyfriend’s penis and stabbing his friend later claimed the brutal double homicide was “God’s will”, a court has heard.

Jasmine Eveleigh, 44, was experiencing severe mental health issues and had reported hearing voices telling her that her children were being molested in the lead-up to the Brunswick stabbings, her sister told the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Ms Eveleigh is charged with murdering her boyfriend Samir Esbeck, 59, and Sarkis Abboud, 61, at the Hope St apartment complex about 5.20am on May 5.

Fresh details surrounding the alleged double murder were aired during a compulsory examination of Ms Eveleigh’s younger sister, Jessica, who relayed a conversation the pair had in prison in May.

“Seeing her that day, it wasn’t like a normal conversation,” Jessica Eveleigh said.

“She was very confused, she didn’t make a lot of sense,”

“I tried to understand more … obviously, I was just genuinely wanting to know what the hell happened,” she said.

Samir Esbeck, 59, was Jasmine Eveleigh’s partner.

Jessica told the court Mr Esbeck and her sister had a “tumultuous relationship” and she was very concerned for her sibling.

“Sam was very old school … he was the type of man who believed a woman should be in the kitchen,” she said.

“If they were walking down the street he would abuse her for walking beside him, because she should be walking behind him,” she said.

Mr Esbeck and Ms Eveleigh had been together several years and shared a daughter together, the court heard,

Jessica told the court her sister spoke “a lot about God” during their prison conversation and remarked: “It’s going to be OK, we’re all going to be in heaven together”.

“She was trying to reassure me, saying we were all going to be together,” she said.

Jessica said she when she asked about her sister’s hand wound during the visit, the accused killer simply replied: “I copped it”.

New details were also revealed about the stranger who offered a badly bleeding Ms Eveleigh a lift on the morning of the stabbings.

“She told me about how there was a man who gave her a lift that night and that he was trying to help her,” Jessica told the court.

“He kept saying to her: ‘It’s OK, I’ve been there before’,” she said, adding that she believed he was referring to her sister’s injury.

Jessica said her sister told her she was “losing a lot of blood” and the man had pulled over and looked for something in the back of his car to wrap around her wounded hand.

At that point, Ms Eveleigh attempted to get into the driver’s seat of the car before the man told her to “f--- off”, the court heard.

“I assume she got out, she never told me anything more,” Jessica said.

A second witness, Abdul Maqi, was also compelled to give evidence but failed to front court.

Prosecutor Daniel Porceddu said police had attended his address on Tuesday morning but he was not there and asked for a warrant to be issued for his arrest.

It is unclear what his connection to the matter is.

Ms Eveleigh did not attend her sister’s examination hearing and will next front court on September 19.
