Graphic images have been released of the bloodied scene faced by first responders attending a home where a man had killed his wife’s ex-lover, but also died in the ambush.

Glen Cassidy was allegedly “persuaded” by his wife of only two weeks, Biannca Edmunds, to shoot dead her former partner, Michael Caposiena, to end a custody battle over their son.

He sourced a gun and drove the 170km from his Shepparton home to Mr Caposiena’s Westmeadows flat in Melbourne on March 12, 2016.

As Mr Caposiena, 32, tried to fight off his attacker, who was trying to move the gun towards his head, he stabbed Mr Cassidy, 49, with a kitchen knife.

Photos, including of the bloodstained knife and parts of a gun, were shown to a Supreme Court jury this week as Ms Edmunds, 36, faces trial for murder.

The white-handled knife could be seen laying near Mr Caposiena’s body inside his home where he had fallen beside the fridge after being shot in the head.

Out on the front porch, a pool of blood had begun to soak into the concrete where Mr Caposiena was allegedly first confronted by Mr Cassidy.

At the bottom of the stairs lay Mr Cassidy, who had died from blood loss.

Eerily, a black cap, bearing the words “Grim the Reaper”, sat nearby.

The court heard Ms Edmunds had previously been in a relationship with Mr Caposiena, and they shared a young son together.

For the first two years of the boy’s life, Mr Caposiena wasn’t involved.

But he had come back into his life and wanted to be involved in the boy’s life.

Ms Edmunds’ mother, Ellen Edmunds, on Friday told the court her daughter did not want Mr Caposiena in her son’s life as he had been violent towards her when they were together.

“At one stage, I remember Biannca telling me that Michael was causing problems with wanting to have access visits, and I told her he’s entitled to see his son, maybe she could arrange to get supervised visits,” Mrs Edmunds told the court.

“She said she wanted him to piss off, and that she wished he wasn’t around anymore.

“She said that she wished Michael would fall off the face of the Earth.”

In the hours after the killings, Mrs Edmunds said her daughter called her saying both men were dead, and she went to her home to support her.

She said her daughter was “hysterical” and told her that night that “Glen wasn’t the one who was supposed to die”.

“One of the things Biannca said that night that has stuck with me ever since was that, ‘It’s all my fault. It wasn’t meant to get this out of control. I never wanted Glen to end up dead’,” Mrs Edmunds said.

“I didn’t ask her what she meant by those comments because I didn’t want to know.”

The next day, while having a cup of tea with her mother, she allegedly made another comment that “all her troubles were over”.

“She said she didn’t have to worry about child custody issues anymore,” Mrs Edmunds said.

Biannca Edmunds denies having any knowledge of her husband’s plan to kill Mr Caposiena.

She has pleaded not guilty to murder.

The trial, before Justice Lex Lasry, continues.
