A gun dealer has been jailed after falsifying records for six missing semiautomatic high-powered Glock pistols.

David Trevor Bush was handed a 15-month sentence for keeping the guns off his records, considered a major breach of the state’s gun laws.

The Drouin-based licensed firearms dealer came under scrutiny from Victoria Police’s licensing and regulation division after a spot audit in 2019.

Mr Bush was later charged with making false or misleading entries in a registry.

The Herald Sun has been told the charges related to two Glock 17 models, two Glock 19s, a 23 and a 26. Those weapons have not been recovered.

“During the spot audit, police uncovered some inconsistencies in relation to the practices of the firearm dealership, which was operating from a residential address,” a Victoria Police statement said.

“This led to a full audit of the dealership’s activities performed by LRD, which resulted in a 51-year-old Drouin male being charged with six counts of false firearm entries in the register of transactions.”

Police said Mr Bush’s firearm dealers licence was immediately suspended and his weapons confiscated. Among them were machine guns and military ordnance.

“As this matter remains before court, we are unable to comment any further,” the force statement said.

Mr Bush appeared in Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court this week where he was sentenced to 15 months’ jail with a non-parole period of nine months.

It is not known whether a firearm prohibition order has been imposed on the former gun dealer.

The Herald Sun revealed last month that almost 1500 Victorians had been hit with FPOs, which ban them from possessing guns and give police the power to search their homes and vehicles without a warrant.

FPOs were introduced four years ago and their imposition has steadily increased.

Fifty-two people have applied to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to have their orders reviewed.

None has been successful.
