A man has been left fighting for life following a brutal assault in Footscray on Friday night.
The 24-year-old Footscray local was allegedly set upon by a group of offenders in Albert Street just before 9.30pm, receiving life-threatening stab wounds.
The offenders reportedly fled the scene following the assault while the victim was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.
A crime scene has been established with detectives from the Major Crime Scene Unit expected to attend the scene on Saturday morning.
CCTV of the alleged assault shows a large group of men brawling on the street before a white car speeds off.
About four men chase the car before one of them turns their attention to the victim.
He is grabbed by the shirt before a huge machete is plunged into his back at least twice.
The victim manages to escape, walking away along Albert St.
The group of men then also walk in that direction.
Blood was left spattered across the road and footpath on Saturday morning as detectives quizzed nearby businesses.
There are few security cameras as several buildings have been left derelict or knocked down.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said it’s not currently known whether the parties involved are known to each other and urged anyone who witnessed the assault or has information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
