Two prisoners have been injured in a knife-fight inside a maximum security jail.

At least one of them was taken to hospital with severe injuries after the bloodshed at Barwon Prison, near Geelong.

Ambulance officers were called to the maximum security jail at Lara at 9.30am on Monday.

One man had suffered upper-body injuries.

Barwon is regarded as the state’s most secure prison and houses inmates serving long sentences.

“Victoria Police statement said the matter was under investigation.

“The two male victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and the investigation is continuing,” the statement said.

It was the second knife-fight at Barwon in the space of two months to end with both combatants injured.

In March, two men fought with shivs in what was suspected of being a prearranged showdown.
