The identities of the men charged over the double fatal shooting in Rye have been revealed following their arrest after weeks allegedly on the run.

Accused gunman Jarod Smit, 25, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday charged with murder, aggravated home invasion and armed robbery.

His co-accused was named as Mason Matticoli, 24, who is already behind bars charged with the same offences.

The pair, both from Narre Warren, spent almost three weeks at large following the fatal shootings of 19-year-old Charlyze Hayter and 29-year-old Jackson Gilmour inside a Rye home on December 2.

Mr Smit was arrested on Sunday, two days after the arrest of Mr Matticoli.

Dressed in a black jumper, Mr Smit barely spoke throughout the brief court hearing.

It was revealed a centrefire rifle was used in the shootings.

Charge sheets allege Mr Smit murdered Mr Gilmour and robbed him of a black duffel bag and bank cards valued at $100.

His lawyer Sandra Gaunt asked that he be seen by a custody nurse in prison for a range of psychiatric conditions including bipolar disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

It is Mr Smit’s first time in custody, the court heard.

Both men were remanded to reappear in court on May 23.

On Sunday, it was revealed for the first time that police had in their sights two accused killers.

It’s understood Ms Hayter was shot dead by Mr Gilmour after she allegedly broke into his Parson St home with company and violently demanded cash.

Mr Gilmour was then shot dead before his attackers fled the scene of the botched home invasion.

Court documents reveal homicide squad detectives were granted a warrant for Mr Smit’s arrest on Friday, the day his co-accused was taken into custody.

“The accused is likely to abscond,” the warrant read.
