The man accused of the 1977 Easey Street killings will face a committal hearing to test the evidence against him in October, with 19 witnesses set to be called.

The man accused of the 1977 Easey Street killings will face a committal hearing to test the evidence against him in October.

Perry Kouroumblis appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link from Melbourne Assessment Prison for a brief administrative hearing on Tuesday.

Wearing glasses and a light-coloured shirt, Mr Kouroumblis confirmed he could see and hear the court.

The court heard 19 witnesses would be called to give evidence at a six-day committal hearing beginning on October 27.

A committal hearing is held in the lower court, with the presiding magistrate to determine if there is sufficient evidence for Mr Kouroumblis to stand trial.

It was the third court appearance for Mr Kouroumblis since he was extradited from Italy and charged with murdering Suzanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett in their Collingwood share house on Easey Street in January 1977.

He is also charged with raping Ms Armstrong.

Their bodies were not discovered until three days later.

Mr Kouroumblis is yet to enter a formal plea in court, but has previously maintained his innocence and intention to fight the charges.

Police were allegedly able to match a DNA sample taken at the Easey St crime scene with Mr Kouroumblis in a major breakthrough in the investigation 47 years on.

Mr Kouroumblis will return to court in October.
