The case for the man accused of the Easey St killings has been hit with a three-month delay as key DNA evidence continues to be analysed.

Perry Kouroumblis appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court via video link from Melbourne Assessment Prison for a brief administrative hearing on Wednesday.

It was his second court appearance since he was extradited from Italy and charged with two counts of murder and one of rape in December.

The prosecution and defence jointly requested an adjournment for three months to allow for DNA analysis to be finalised.

Magistrate Brett Sonnet, who has been assigned to manage the case, urged the parties to progress to a contested hearing as soon as possible.

“This matter should be given the highest priority,” Mr Sonnet said. “The court stands ready to hear a committal.”

A committal hearing is held in the lower court, with the presiding magistrate to determine if there is sufficient evidence for Mr Kouroumblis to stand trial.

Ms Armstrong, 27, and Ms Bartlett, 28, were stabbed to death inside their Easey St home in Collingwood in January 1977.

Their bodies were not discovered until three days later.

Ms Armstrong’s 16-month-old son, Gregory, was left unharmed.

Mr Kouroumblis is yet to enter a formal plea in court, but has previously maintained his innocence and intention to fight the charges.

Police allege they were able to match a DNA sample taken at the Easey St crime scene with Mr Kouroumblis in a major breakthrough in the investigation 47 years on.

Mr Kouroumblis will return to court on June 3.
