A knife-wielding man committed three violent carjackings – including dragging one driver from her car – before engaging in a dangerous two hour highway pursuit.

A father left drivers terrified during his violent carjackings before he led police on a dangerous pursuit.

Kevin Ronald Gordon Treloar, 22, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court earlier this month for his “outrageous” conduct.

The court heard the first victim was sitting in his car on December 13, 2020 at a petrol station in Wingfield.

“You opened his door with a 10 cm flick-knife in your hand and told him you had a knife,” Judge Karen Thomas said during sentencing.

“(The victim) got out of his car and you drove away in it with his iPhone inside his car.”

The court heard Treloar then pulled up behind a husband-and-wife in their car on the Barossa Valley Highway about an hour later.

“She (the driver) heard you tell her ‘get out of the f---ing car or I’ll knife you’,” Judge Thomas said.

“You opened the door and took the keys and attempted to drag her from the car, but she was still wearing her seatbelt.”

The woman and her husband managed to drive off.

Treloar then blocked oncoming traffic on the Highway and approached a woman who had stopped to avoid crashing into him.

“You said ‘if you don’t get out of the car, I’m going to f---ing kill you’,” Judge Thomas said.

“You pulled (the victim) from her car with such violence that she lost her shoe in the footwell.”

The court heard the victim was dragged kicking and screaming onto the road, where she feared being run over.

Police had been tracking Treloar during these incidents.

“Numerous police were involved in a lengthy and dangerous pursuit through the Adelaide Hills and back down through the northeastern suburbs,” Judge Thomas said.

“You drove over road spikes at least twice and drove on the rims of the Suzuki for some time.”

The court heard Treloar drove on the wrong side of the road and narrowly avoided collisions on multiple occasions.

“You risked the safety of countless innocent road users over the course of two-and-a-half hours,” Judge Thomas said.

“It is incredible no-one was killed or seriously harmed by your driving.”

Treloar, of Andrews Farm, had previously pleaded guilty to multiple offences including robbery and driving dangerously to escape police pursuit.

The court heard the offending had significant impacts on the victims, with the third victim left severely traumatised.

“She says she was terrified by the violence of your actions, not knowing your intentions … fearing you wanted to kill her,” Judge Thomas said.

The court heard Treloar, who was born in Port Augusta, has significant issues with drugs and alcohol.

“You have used violence to deal with conflict all your life,” Judge Thomas said.

The court heard Treloar, who is a new father, is remorseful for his “outrageous” actions.

Judge Thomas sentenced Treloar to nine years jail, with a non-parole period of seven years and two months.

“Your other offending was very serious, specifically having regard to the use of a knife and violence in taking or trying to take the victims’ cars, let alone your very dangerous driving as you tried to evade police,” she said.

The sentence was backdated to December 13, 2020.

Treloar was also disqualified from driving for three years.
