A man is trying to get life back on track after he was found unconscious in a hotel room, surrounded by up to $35,000 worth of drugs.

Adam Scott Fergusson, 25, was jailed in the Adelaide District Court on Monday after he turned to drugs and it had a “catastrophic effect”.

The court heard Fergusson was found unconscious by a housekeeper in an Old Reynella hotel room on December 13, 2020.

“She saw a number of items of concern including what appeared to be a gun, significant amounts of money and plastic bags appearing to contain drugs,” Judge Simon Stretton said during sentencing.

Police attended and found 26g of mixed methamphetamine, 20g of cocaine, as well as nearly $6000 in cash and knuckledusters.

The court heard Fergusson, who was addicted to illicit drugs, turned to living out of a hotel room.

Fergusson, of Hawthorndene, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of drug trafficking.

The court heard the value of the cocaine was up to $9400 and the methamphetamine had a value of up to $26,000.

“Given the quantities of drug and money concerned, you are a significant ongoing trafficker and not some addicted street-level dealer trafficking small amounts merely to support your own habit,” Judge Stretton said.

The court heard Fergusson’s life began to spiral when his parents divorced and he moved out of home.

“At that time you made the particularly stupid decision to start taking methamphetamine and it has had a catastrophic effect on your life,” Judge Stretton said.

“As is so often the case, it wrecked relationships with parents and your girlfriend.”

The court heard Fergusson has not taken drugs since his arrest.

“These drugs, particularly methamphetamine, are very harmful both to you, to all the people you traffic to and the wider community,” Judge Stretton said.

Judge Stretton sentenced Fergusson to three years and 11 months’ jail, with a non-parole period of one year and 11 months.
