TRAVELLERS wishing to stay in a traditional Japanese inn while visiting Kyoto can now book at 25 properties via a new reservations website.

Named ryokan, the inns are small, family-run or privately owned guesthouses that allow travellers to immerse themselves in traditional Japanese culture and hospitality.

The Ryokan Experience Kyoto website brings together 25 ryokan in the city with real-time availability and bookings for both individual travellers and travel agents around the world, and is the first such service for ryokan in their 1300-year history.

Established by EXA-R, another 100 Kyoto ryokan will join the reservations website over the next year, while other Japanese destinations, including the Tohoku region, are expected to follow as part of a goal to include 1000 properties by 2016.

”Ryokan are a key aspect of our unique culture, and I believe you can’t experience true Japanese hospitality unless you stay at one,” EXA-R president Hiroki Fukunaga said.

“I believe that by starting this new service we’re creating the chance for overseas travellers to experience Japan like never before.”
