Bureau of Meteorology forecasts isolated showers, strong wind warnings for states

One state is forecast to record isolated showers of up to 100m of rain, while strong wind warnings remain in place for the rest of the country.

Queenslanders are warned to keep their umbrellas at close reach, as isolated showers of up to 100m of rain are forecast for parts of the state, while strong wind warnings remain in place for other states.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts parts of Queensland can expect 50mm up to 100m of rainfall on Wednesday alone, with the storms expected to continue through the week.

Bureau meteorologist Sarah Scully said a rainband would continue to weaken as it moved across the country before contracting into central parts of Queensland.

It comes as a further front “brushes” from the west, bringing more showers and more wind across the country.

Ms Scully said the front would continue to push into southeastern parts of the country on Thursday and Friday, including Adelaide, Melbourne and Tasmania.

The front also brings a potential for more snow around the resorts, with frosty conditions on the horizon.

“After that, a ridge of high pressure really starts to build through as we approach the weekend,” she said.

“Temperatures are expected to go to mid to high teens from Thursday.”

Meanwhile, Central Queensland areas took the top spots for rainfall over the past 24 hours, including Mount Lowe, near Clermont, which recorded 34mm.

Queensland

Isolated thunderstorms are possible in eastern Queensland from the Capricornia south to about Gympie on Wednesday.

Brisbane is also forecast for possible showers on Wednesday, with a top of 22C.

A strong wind warning remains in place for the Peninsula Coast and Cooktown Coast on Thursday.

Drier weather is forecast over the next few days for the Central Queensland region as showers contract to the coast.

Victoria

Melbourne will experience strong northerly winds of 15 to 20km/h on Wednesday before things get more intense on Thursday, with northerly winds forecast to reach 25 to 35km/h.

The city will reach a top of 15C on Thursday with up to 1mm of rain forecast.

A strong wind warning remains in place for the West Coast and Central Coast on Thursday.

Meanwhile, frosts with temperatures down to -1C are forecast for Thursday morning in parts of the North East, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts.

South Australia

While Adelaide residents will be enjoying the sunshine on Wednesday, a high chance of showers of up to 9mm is likely for Thursday in the state’s capital.

Northerly winds of 20 to 30km/h will also hit the city in the middle of Thursday, with the city reaching a top temperature of 17C.

Strong wind warnings remain in place for the Lower West Coast, Central Coast and South Central Coast on Wednesday and for the Central Coast, South Central Coast, Investigator Strait, Upper South East Coast and Lower South East Coast on Thursday.

Western Australia

Perth will be partly cloudy on Thursday and Friday after the city experienced a shower or two on Wednesday.

Temperatures are set to reach tops of 20-21C over the coming days.

Gale warnings remain in place for the Leeuwin Coast and Albany Coast on Wednesday before being downgraded to a strong wind warning for those areas on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a strong wind warning has also been issued for Perth Local Waters, Geraldton Coast, Lancelin Coast, Perth Coast, Bunbury Geographe Coast and Esperance Coast on Wednesday.

NSW

In Sydney, the sun continues to shine for most of the remainder of the week.

There’s a chance of fog and frost in the western suburbs on Thursday as the city is forecast to reach 20C.

Elsewhere in the state, a minor flood warning remains in place for Booligal.

The Lachlan River at Booligal Weir is at 2.5m and rising slowly, with the bureau warning it may peak near 2.6m in the next few days, with minor flooding.
