Police are searching for a group of youths after they allegedly assaulted a German backpacker with a gardening tool during an attempted robbery inside a beachside toilet block.
The 24-year-old tourist was confronted by a group of up to five young males wearing face coverings on Kempton St at St Georges Beach in the Geraldton suburb of Bluff Point in Western Australia’s mid-west about 10.30pm on Monday.
The group allegedly demanded the man hand over his clothing and jewellery.
He was also allegedly threatened with a garden tool if he didn’t oblige.
When he refused their demands, the man was allegedly assaulted and struck in the head with the gardening tool by the group who then fled the area.
The tourist was taken to hospital for treatment for a large cut to his forehead.
Police believe the group, who remain on the run, may have been in the Beresford and Bluff Point areas before and after the alleged assault.
Investigators are urging people who live in those suburbs to review their CCTV footage and check to see if any gardening tools have been stolen from their homes.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
