Australian tennis star Jordan Thompson has been knocked out of the US Open after suffering an agonising five-set loss to Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan on Thursday morning AEST.

The 28-year-old, who won his first-round match against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in five sets, lost 3-6 6-2 6-3 4-6 3-6 on Court 11, ending his Flushing Meadows campaign in the second round.

Galan will face either Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in the third round.

Things got heated early in the fourth set when Thompson confronted Galan in an ugly exchange at the net.

The Australian walked towards the net when his opponent was about to serve, with the pair engaging in a heated argument before the chair umpire intervened.

Thompson and Galan butted heads again at a change of ends.

Three-time Australian Open doubles champion Todd Woodbridge suggested the argument was centred around Galan’s lengthy gaps between serves.

“There’s a little bit of agro, a bit of tension between the boys,” he said on Channel 9.

“I think it’s got to do with the time that Galan is taking.

“(Thompson is) never one to back down when he’s out on court, but there’s tension and stress.”

Meanwhile, Aussie No. 1 Alex de Minaur has exacted revenge for his Wimbledon defeat two months ago, moving into the last 32 at the US Open with a four-set dispatching of Chile’s Cristian Garin.

Garin rallied from two sets and match point down to upset the world No. 20 at the grass-court grand slam and found himself down by the same deficit on Thursday – and the Chilean again claimed the third set.

That loss in July robbed de Minaur of a maiden Wimbledon quarter-final, but he ensured history did not repeat, completing a 6-3 6-0 4-6 6-2 victory in emphatic fashion to reach round three for the fourth time in five years.

Compatriots Nick Kyrgios and Ajla Tomljanovic have also advanced into the third round.

Elsewhere in Flushing Meadows, American tennis champion Serena Williams defeated world No. 2 Anett Kontaveitoff in a huge upset in front of a record crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 40-year-old, competing in the last tournament of her stellar career, booked her spot in the third round after putting on an absolute clinic against the 2021 US Open finalist.

Williams will next face Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round following the epic 7-6 2-6 6-2 win.

Williams now boasts a 23-2 record in her last 25 matches against players ranked in the top two, a run that dates back to 2007.
