US Open 2022: Alex de Minaur exacts revenge for Wimbledon loss to join Nick Kyrgios and Ajla Tomljanovic in round 3

A trio of Australians have advanced to the round of 32 at the US Open, with another three countrymen hoping to do the same on Friday.

Not this time.

Alex de Minaur has exacted revenge for his Wimbledon defeat two months ago, moving into the last 32 at the US Open with a four-set dispatching of Cristian Garin.

Garin rallied from two sets and match point down to upset Australia’s world No.20 at the grass-court grand slam and found himself down by the same deficit on Thursday – and the Chilean again claimed the third set.

That loss in July robbed de Minaur of a maiden Wimbledon quarter-final but he ensured history did not repeat, completing a 6-3 6-0 4-6 6-2 victory in emphatic fashion to reach round 3 for the fourth time in five years.

Australia is enjoying an impressive start in New York, with Nick Kyrgios and Ajla Tomljanovic also advancing to the third round.

Kyrgios needed four sets to oust France’s Benjamin Bonzi and set up a clash with American J.J. Wolf, while Tomljanovic staved off two break-back points in the final game to beat Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina 1-6 6-2 7-5.

The result edges Tomljanovic closer to her career-best ranking of 38 as she prepares to take on retiring megastar Serena Williams, who sent second seed Anett Kontaveit packing in round 2.

“I’m very happy with my level but probably the happiest with how I was mentally. That, for me, was very important coming into the match and how I dealt with the circumstances,” de Minaur said.

“I’m happy to get through another match (but) that’s what I’m so proud of – that I was able to bounce back and not let it affect me.

“I easily could have started thinking about what happened in Wimby, being two sets to love up and kind of letting that one escape away from me.

“But I kind of knuckled down, stuck to my weapons and my tactics and what I wanted to do. I was able to get on top (after) the third and play some great tennis to finish it off.”

The 18th-seeded Sydneysider’s biggest test this week looms next against Spain’s No.12 seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who won their sole career meeting in straight sets at the French Open three years ago.

But Jordan Thompson was unable to win back-to-back five-setters, losing 3-6 6-2 3-6 6-4 6-3 to Stefanos Tsitsipas-conqueror Daniel Elahi Galan across almost four hours.

James Duckworth, Alexei Popyrin and Jason Kubler will try to make it six Australians in the round of 32 when they play their second-round matches on Friday.

Duckworth takes on 25th seed Dan Evans, Popyrin is up against No.14 seed Diego Schwartzman and Kubler must overcome 22nd-seeded Frances Tiafoe.
