The chair umpire who famously butted heads with Serena Williams in last year’s controversial US Open women’s final Carlos Ramos has found himself on the receiving end of a Danielle Collins whack after the pair clashed during the Australian Open women’s semi-final.

Collins, renowned for her temper and on court demeanour, was less than satisfied with Ramos but the main blow up came at the start of the second set.

With the American on serve, Ramos instructed her to replay a point after becoming concerned that beeping from the let chord had been picked up by the microphone and therefore distracted players.

Collins replayed before challenging Ramos again because he did not ask her to replay the serve for a second time because the same beeping was heard.

The experienced chair umpire said the ball had been hit and called out before the sound occurred.

Here’s how it all played out:

UMPIRE: “Let. Replay the point. This beeped. The machine beeped before the ball went over the net. I thought that might hinder you, because the microphone picks it up. I know the ball did not touch the neck...”

COLLINS: “Every time I hit a good serve or win the point, it is something.”

PLAYER: “It beeped again. It beeped but it was a fault.”

UMPIRE: “The serve was out.”

PLAYER: “You made me reserve the point when I won it, and now I hit the serve out and you are not giving me the same - you see what I’m saying.”

PLAYER: “It beeped again.”

“It beeped but it was a fault.”

UMPIRE: “The serve was out.”

“She is getting confused now, Danielle Collins.”

UMPIRE: “It is not functions now. I’m not going to use it.”

PLAYER: “You made me reserve the point when I won it, and now I hit the serve out and you are not giving me the same - you see what I’m saying. Because you hit the serve out.”

Sam Smith was impressed by how Ramos, no stranger to controversy, had conducted himself.

“Carlos Ramos explaining things pretty well. He is having a good match so far,” she said on Channel 9.

“He will be sensitive to that. He was the chair umpire at the US Open final with Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams in a pretty controversial match.”

Collins downplayed criticism of the decision to close Rod Laver Arena’s roof under the Australian Open extreme heat policy.

Locked at 4-all with Petra Kvitova, who is known to suffer badly in hot weather, Collins struggled to impact after the roof closure.

As temperatures hit 40.8c at Melbourne Park, Collins lost 6-7 (2-7) 0-6 as the Czech exploded in the cooler indoor conditions.

“Yeah, it is what it is,” Collins said after a stunning breakout slam.

“That’s what they (officials) do.

“I think that no matter what the situation is, if it’s really hot…they need to start the match the way it’s gonna finish.

“I think they do that in football, and I think it certainly changed a little bit of the rhythm in the match.

“But again, it is what it is, and that’s the decision they made, and she played really great tennis.

“I think that should probably be the focus of the conversation.

“Honestly I like playing in the heat. Don’t get me wrong, it certainly has its challenges.

“So I kind of, yeah, embrace that very well. Indoor tennis is a different game. Certainly had its effect.”

Collins is a classic late-bloomer, having excelled as a decorated champion on the US collegiate circuit.

Her surge to the last four will leave carry her into the world’s top 25.

“Maybe some people thought I was a one-hit wonder, it was a fluke. Clearly none of this has been a fluke,” she said.

“I think there is a lot of great things to build off of, and I think I had a really great learning experience throughout the entire tournament.”

Collins did not use a malfunctioning net cord as an excuse.
