Caulfield Cup 2016: Full list of weights for the 2400m staying feature

PROMINENT owner Lloyd Williams has warned Order Of St George won’t run in the Caulfield Cup and is unlikely to come for the Melbourne Cup because of what he perceives as too much weight for the emerging stayer.

The Aidan O’Brien trained stayer, along with stablemate Highland Reel, were both allocated 58kg when weights were released on Wednesday for the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 15.

Racing Victoria’s general manager of racing, Greg Carpenter, said Order Of St George was weighted at 54kg in last year’s Melbourne Cup after winning the Irish St Leger.

MELBOURNE CUP: THE NOMINATIONS

“It was the equal of 58kg for an older horse,” Carpenter said. “He is undefeated this season and has won the Ascot Gold Cup very impressively but those races haven’t taken his rating to any higher than it was last year.

“The top weight must have at least 58kg and the [Melbourne Cup] weights will be released in two weeks’ time and then it’s up to the owner of every horse to review his own horse’s weight and that of the others and then make a decision whether they are going to run in the race.”

While Carpenter said there was no limit on what the top weight could receive, Order Of St George would have to do “something significantly better” than what he has done by winning the Ascot Gold Cup and the St Leger to earn more.

He said there is no imperative that if he wins the coming Irish St Leger that he has to receive more than 58kg in both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

“When the weights came out before the Irish St Leger and Septimus won it by 10 lengths, I didn’t penalise him,” Carpenter said. “And there is no imperative that if [Order Of St George] wins the Irish St Leger that he will get more than the 58kg than he got in the Caulfield Cup today.”

Trainer Mick Price’s Caulfield Cup favourite Tarzino has been allocated 54kg.

He is rated a $13 chance by the TAB.

Young New Zealand trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, who recently relocated to Cranbourne, share the top weights for four-year-olds after their ATC Derby (2400m) winner Tavago was given the same weight as Tarzino.

Tarzino, which has been set for the race. is aiming to become just the fourth horses to the complete the VRC Derby/Caulfield Cup double.

Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance and Australian Cup winner Preferment have 56.5kg, while French horse Erupt and last year’s Caulfield Cup placegetter Our Ivanhowe have 56kg.

Carpenter said Tarzino and Tavago had been allocated 54kg on the back of impressive wins in the Victoria Derby and ATC Derby respectively,

“Tarzino is aiming to emulate the likes of Elvstroem (2004), Manfred (1925) and Poseidon (1906) by winning he Caulfield Cup the season after taking out the Victoria Derby, while Tavago looks to retrace the path Mongolian Khan took in 2015 by winning the ATC Derby-Caulfield Cup double,” Carpenter said.

“With an international rating of 121, Highland Reel is the highest-rated galloper in 2016 among the 171 Caulfield Cup nominations, and he shares the status of Caulfield Cup top weight with his stablemate Order Of St George, who was very impressive winning the Irish St Leger in 2015 and Ascot Gold Cup earlier this year over extended journeys.

“In recent years we have seen the better performed horses come to the fore in the BMW Caulfield Cup, with two of the past four renewals won by a horse carrying the top weight of 58kg in the international entrants Dunaden (2012) and Admire Rakti (2014).

“Aidan O’Brien’s northern hemisphere three-year-old Idaho, who is guaranteed a start in the Caulfield Cup thanks to his brilliant win in the Great Voltiguer Stakes, has been allocated 53kg, which is three kilograms below weight-for-age benchmark.”

Along with Idaho, those horses guaranteed a start in the 2016 Caulfield Cup as the winner of ballot exempt races this season are Sir Michael Stoute’s Jockey Club Stakes (UK) winner Exosphere (55kg) and Mornington Cup winner Berisha (50kg).
