Stewards seize contents of raceday bag connected to Michelle Payne stable at Geelong race meeting

Michelle Payne is caught up in a stewards’ inquiry despite not being on course at a Geelong race meeting after contents of a raceday bag from her stable were confiscated and sent off for analysis.

Michelle Payne is at the centre of a Racing Victoria stewards’ inquiry into the contents of a raceday bag at Geelong races on Thursday.

RV Stewards opened and adjourned the inquiry after a number of items were found in a raceday bag connected to Payne’s stable.

Payne had one starter at the meeting, five-year-old gelding Jukila, who finished fifth in the fifth race.

Payne was not on course for the meeting but stewards confirmed that following the race they had spoken to her about the matter via telephone and had also questioned two of her staff members present at Geelong.

Stewards confirmed a number of products found in the bag and used for topical medication had been sent away for analysis.

The stewards report said: “Stewards opened an inquiry after receiving a report from stipendiary steward Mrs J. McSwain that during a routine inspection a number of items were found in the raceday bag and subsequently in the vehicle associated with trainer Ms Michelle Payne.

“After taking evidence from Ms R Peatling, Ms C Kelley and after hearing evidence from Michelle Payne (via the telephone) the matter was adjourned pending the analysis of a number of items taken and furthermore from the samples obtained from Jukila.”
