Simon Beasley faces more allegations from racing authorities

Bookmaker and former VFL player Simon Beasley could be banned again after racing authorities raised allegations over 138 bets he placed.

Controversial bookmaker Simon Beasley could face another disqualification after being charged by racing authorities with misconduct around an alleged breach of the organisations bet recording rules.

The breach relates to a series of 138 bets placed between September 1 last year to January 26 this year in which racing authorities question the way they were recorded.

Beasley was contacted for a comment but could not be reached by deadline.

He faces one charge after allegedly breaching Australian Rule of Racing (AR) 228 (b) which states “a person must not engage in ... misconduct, improper conduct or unseemly behaviour”.

Beasley — who played 154 games for Footscray in the VFL — in 2009 was disqualified for four years and fined $50,000 for avoiding lodging bets with regulatory authorities.

At that time it was found he took 1598 bets valued at $3.8 million which were not lodged.

The current alleged breach came to light after regular “real time” monitoring of licensed bookmakers betting systems, including phones.

As an offcourse bookmaker Beasley has to record bets in a ledger that are made by punters who call his approved phone or contact him over the internet.

Stewards allege he accepted and recorded bets outside of these licence conditions.

Beasley — once a major player in the bookmaking scene — returned in September last year with his new Beazabet business.

Last November Beasley and his wife Merrie sold their South Yarra home for $6.4 million which he brought for $5.74 million in 2013.

It is understood the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board will have to determine whether the breach was simply poor practice or a deliberate act.

The date of the hearing is yet to be fixed. Authorities would not say the value of the bets.

The misconduct charge which he faces is considered a lesser breach than the dishonest behaviour charge he previously faced.

While there is no mandatory penalty for this charge, he can still be fined, suspended or banned if the board decides he is guilty.

Stewards allege that in the time specified:

BEASLEY recorded 88 bets in his ledger that did not correspond with calls made on his approved phone, and/or;

RECORDED ten bets for quantities that did not match the amount lodged on the phone, and/or;

RECORDED four bets on races that did not correspond with the races on the phone bet, and/or;

AUTHORITIES also allege he “impersonated and/or facilitated the impersonation of 24 bets placed on his approved phone”.
