HOW TO BET ON THE TAB
WIN
The simplest bet type is also the most popular.
If you predict which horse will win the race you can take the complication out of the equation
and simply back that horse. If it crosses the line first, you are a winner.
In the Melbourne Cup there are 24 runners and you can bet on more than one horse.

PLACE
If you like a runner at big odds, or want to bet more conservatively, then the place bet is for you. Simply select and wager on a horse to finish in the top three.
A win, run second or third lands you in the money. Unlike the win bet, this gives you three times as many chances of collecting, but the return is not as generous.

EACH WAY
Having an each-way bet is splitting equally between a win and place bet.
If you have a $10 each-way bet it will cost you $20 as $10 is put on the win and $10 is on the place.
If you bet on a horse paying $5 the win and $2 the place and it wins you collect $70 as you win on both your win bet and your place bet. If the horse runs second or third you collect $20 as the place portion of the bet is paid.
TRIFECTA
The trifecta requires you to select the runners that will finish first, second and third in a race in the correct finishing order. If you “box” your selections, they can finish first, second and third in any order.
Flexi betting is available so punters can choose the amount they want to bet and get a percentage of the dividend.
FIRST 4
A winning First 4 bet requires you to select the first, second, third and fourth placegetters in the correct finishing order. You can also choose a Box First 4 where the four horses you select can finish in any order.
QUADDIE
To win a Quaddie, you must select the four winners from four consecutive and nominated races. You can select any number of horses in each leg and the cost is calculated by the number of horses selected in each race.
Check the Herald Sun form guide to see the Quaddie legs.

QUINNY’S TOP PICKS FOR CUP DAY
SAFE NICK
$100 the win: Shared Ambition
(Flemington Race 4, No.3)
The Chris Waller-trained galloper has won his past four starts including a breathtaking victory at Caulfield last start. If you want to back one winner on the day and lock in a profit, then he is the galloper to jump on.
SENSIBLE NICK
$50 each-way: Royal Symphony
(Flemington Race 9, No.1)
Resumes after nearly two years in the wilderness and is having his first start for the all-conquering Hawkes stable. Was the most exciting horse in the nation before injury but can resume with a win at a nice price.
SILLY NICK
First 4 in the Melbourne Cup
$100 on 2,9 / 2,9 / Field / Field
Let’s have a crack at snagging the First 4 and hope we can call in sick for work on Wednesday. For mine there are clearly two leading chances to win the Cup with Mer De Glace and Constantinople so let’s take them running first and second and throw in the field for third and fourth and hope some runners at cricket-score odds can run into the money.
HEAD NOT HEART
The barrier draw has unfortunately almost squashed the chances of the locally bred runners of winning the Melbourne Cup.
Both Vow And Declare and Surprise Baby have both enjoyed outstanding campaigns and before the international invasion the form of the two Cup aspirants would have been as strong as any winner before the turn of the century.
Following the barrier draw I am now predicting Japan to complete a clean sweep of the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup with Mer De Glace.
SMILING STEVIE
Let’s get sentimental.
Stephen Baster is one of the most popular jockeys in the country and is about to call time on his decorated career.
The Group 1 winning jockey has four rides on Melbourne Cup Day, all of them at big odds.
Racing has a knack of dishing up a nice story and Baster winning a race would fit in nicely to the storyline so if you want to try to cash in his rides:
Maracaibo (Race 3, No.11) $26
Sirkos (Race 4, No.11) $151
Runaway (Race 8, No.5) $26
Runson (Race 9, No.7) $18
On form they all have very little chance, but it is Melbourne Cup day so movie producers be on high alert.
