Channel 10’s coverage of Derby Day cops heat on social media

Channel 10 started the Melbourne Cup carnival with a major handicap — no Bruce McAvaney. But viewers have taken aim at other aspects of the coverage including a horse drinking beer on TV.

Channel 10 has made a rocky start to its coverage of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

One punter labelled the broadcast “absolute rubbish” as the first day of the carnival was marked by technical glitches and occasionally cringe-worthy interviews.

After issues with on-screen graphics early in the day, there were no graphics at all during the running of feature race the Victoria Derby telling viewers which horses they were watching.

A segment in which Sydney trainer Wydney Roche allowed mare Nettoyer to drink from a cup of beer on live TV also received a frosty reception.

And racing fans have also lamented another key element missing from the coverage — Bruce McAvaney.

The veteran Melbourne Cup caller lost the gig when Ten beat long-time partner Channel 7 for the rights to screen the four-day carnival.

McAvaney has been given permission by Seven to call the race that stops the nation on radio station SEN.
