Melbourne Cup winner Subzero fighting stomach infection after overcoming colic, kidney problem

Melbourne Cup winner and Victorian racing icon Subzero looked to be out of the woods after overcoming colic and a kidney problem — but he now faces a fresh fight.

Subzero’s fight against illness has spread to a third front.

The 1992 Melbourne Cup winner has overcome colic and is winning the battle against a kidney problem, but now has an infection in the wall of his stomach.

“It’s an infection that sometimes follows colic,” Graham Salisbury, Subzero’s long-time carer, said.

“He’s comfortable and doing as well as he can, but he’s on some pretty heavy antibiotics to help with clear up the wall of his stomach.

“He’s still got plenty of drips in him, but he’s in the best possible hands.”

Due to turn 31 next week, Subzero remains at the Bendigo Equine Hospital.

“He’s such a tough horse, he’s used to winning and so we’re hoping he can win this battle.

“But what he’s gone through a fair bit with the colic, then the kidney problems and now this.”

Salisbury has cared for Subzero for 25 years, forming a unique partnership.

The former champion stayer has been employed in a variety of ways, including racing promotions, visits to hospitals and schools.

Salisbury said Subzero overcame a similar illness three years ago.
