Australia will need to find a new spare batter for the fifth Test while the Perth Scorchers have been dealt a major Big Bash League blow with Josh Inglis suffering a calf strain while fielding on day two of the Melbourne Test.
The gloveman, who has provided batting cover throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, has been ruled out of the remainder of the series although Cricket Australia says it is optimistic he will be available for the tour of Sri Lanka beginning in late January.
CA said the injury is “low-grade” and that a replacement player would be announced in due course. Victorian veteran Peter Handscomb shapes as a leading contender.
How much of a role he plays for the Scorchers remains up in the air.
“His availability for the Big Bash League will be determined by his return to play management plan,” CA said.
All-rounder Beau Webster remains in the squad for the Sydney Test as pressure mounts on the struggling Mitch Marsh.
STARS DENIED REPLACEMENT AFTER CURRAN INJURY BLOW
Both the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder have fitness concerns ahead of their Big Bash League clash in Canberra on Saturday night.
Fringe Australian leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha is under an injury cloud heading into the game as he deals with a side issue.
The 23-year-old has however been named in the Thunder’s squad for the game.
The struggling Stars have meanwhile been dealt a further blow with English import Tom Curran ruled out of the clash with a calf injury suffered at training on Friday.
The Stars unsuccessfully applied to Cricket Australia to bring Curran’s compatriot Dan Lawrence from outside the club’s 18-mann squad for the game.
But the winless Stars have been bolstered by the addition of Beau Webster, who has been released from Test duties for the match.
