Sam Kerr has had the two biggest tournaments of her career taken away from her — but the cruel fates can’t take the smile off her face.
The Australian captain will have to watch on from afar as the Matildas’ Olympics campaign begins on Friday morning at 3am (AEST).
Australia’s squad of walking-wounded players faces Germany in Marseille and Kerr will reportedly not be in attendance.
Instead the 30-year-old has shared photos of herself and fiancee Kristie Mewis in London this week 1200km away from the Matildas’ base in the south of France.
Mewis is also missing from the USWNT squad after she and Alex Morgan were among the big-name stars axed by new USA coach Emma Hayes.
But at least Kerr and Mewis have each other.
One photo shared by Kerr on her Instagram stories showed the couple making silly faces in front of the camera.
Mewis captioned the photos by writing: “A little of a lot”.
Other photos in the collection show the couple spending time in the sun with friends and family in London.
While unable to play for the Matildas because of the long-term knee injury she suffered in January, spending time with her partner shows the sad, sweet reality Kerr faces this month.
Kerr will be cheering on her teammates with a pit in her stomach after also missing most of the Matildas’ 2023 World Cup campaign with a calf muscle injury.
The cruel prospect of watching her teammates from miles away will be softened somewhat by Mewis being by her side.
Kerr suffered an ACL injury while on a training camp with her club Chelsea in early January and Football Australia confirmed last month the superstar striker would not be available for selection.
Kerr has continued to make headlines in recent months as the drama surrounding her ongoing court case continues to swirl.
Kerr was charged with intentionally causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress to a male police officer in London on January 30, 2023.
The proceedings were delayed last month and Kerr will have to wait until the new trial date of February 3.
The incident allegedly occurred on January 30, 2023, just hours after Kerr scored an incredible hat-trick to propel Chelsea to a 3-2 FA Cup victory over Liverpool.
About 3am on the night in question, the Chelsea striker allegedly vomited in a taxi, was involved in a dispute about the taxi fare, and allegedly called an attending police officer a “stupid white bastard”.
Kerr’s private life, however, appears more stable than ever with Mewis and her living together in London since the American joined West Ham.
