A new wave of Australian Rugby Sevens talent will be on show in the AON Next Gen Youth series in Sydney this weekend with NSW young guns determined to defend a very special record - and home turf.

Playing are the youngsters being prepared for Olympic duties in the future - including Brisbane 2032 - and national youth teams next year and beyond.

As our senior Sevens players head to Dubai for more World Series action, our rising stars will tackle the Next Gen Youth Series at Southern Districts rugby club.

The best teenage Sevens talent in Australia has been divided into six teams for the crucial tournament

NSW will field a boys and girls side as will Queensland. Barbarians teams, boasting the best young talent from around Australia including Victorians and South Australians, will also play.

While no Australian championship has been played this year this tournament will see the NSW U17 boys team attempt to keep intact an extraordinary record of never being beaten for a title at this level.

“And at every past national title it has been NSW or Queensland in senior women’s or youth girls,” said National 7s Pathway coach and program manager Nathan McMahon.

McMahon said the series will be used to consider and monitor young guns for national academies in 2023 in NSW and Queensland, a world schools event in New Zealand, the delayed Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago in 2023 and also potentially the 2026 for the Youth Olympics.

This weekend the competition will be played out between top under 17s players but under 15 NSW Squad’s have also been named recently.

The under 15 girls will prepare for a Rugby Australia competition on the Gold Coast on January 21-22.
