A five-goal haul from key forward Chelsea Isaac led the way for UNSW Wests as they held on to win 10-7 in the gruelling clash.

A massive third quarter saw Wests leading by two points heading into the final period, with UQ bringing it down to one with just over a minute remaining.

However a penalty shot awarded to Wests was able to secure the win, before Isaac put away her final goal with the seconds ticking away.

In another crossover contest the Drummoyne Devils pulled off a major upset, downing New Zealand club Sea Wolf 10-8 in their U18 girls crossover match.

The Devils held a narrow 8-7 lead heading into the final quarter, setting up a tense final period.

Despite Sea Wolf managing another goal, the Devils powered ahead with two to set up a quarter final against Polo Bears.

UNSW Wests managed to edge out All Hallows 5-3 in a compelling U14 girls’ encounter while a six-goal final terms helped Nordek cruise to an 11-4 win over Kracken in the u14 girls.

Quiet achiever ready to make some national noise

They are the Sydney club helping produce some of our top water polo players and hoping to take the Australian water polo youth championships by storm thousands of kilometres away from their home waters.

The northern beaches club is fielding teams in both the 14 and 18 and under competitions in the first week of the event, which kicks off on Monday.

More than 40 games will be shown live and exclusive on KommunityTV over the five days of competition at Perth’s HBF Centre. That includes seven gold medal matches on the Friday.

And at the helm are a husband and wife who know better than most what it takes to be successful in the water.

Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers have a fine history in helping produce some of our best players - including Stinger Tilly Kearns - with Athens Olympians Jemma (Brownlow before her marriage) and Dean Semmens now coaching at the club and two of their four children playing in the Western Australian tournament in Cooper, 14, and Jett, 16.

“We are very involved. We both played and we love the sport. It’s such a great community,’’ Jemma said.

But because they do not field a water polo league team, they are not as well known as super clubs like Sydney Uni, Balmain and the Drummoyne and Cronulla.

When it comes to the junior ranks though, they are hoping to be a force to be reckoned with.

“We are a strong junior club with one of the highest rates of participation, but we aren't in the national league,’’ Darren said.

“But we are a bit of a nursery for young players. We have a number of players who were Breakers now in the Stingers.”

Stingers guns Kearns, Bronte Halligan and Hayley Ballesty all started their junior careers with the Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers.

Six teams form the club, one of the biggest for juniors in NSW are competing.

The club is hopeful of making the podium in the 16s and 14s age groups.

The 14s girls recently won the Canberra Cup.

The best and brightest will be playing at the Australian water polo youth championships where junior clubs will compete in 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under divisions split across two five-day tournaments and played at four venues in Perth.
