It was one of the games of the tournament - and a NSW derby to boot.

The U18 girls quarter final showdown between UTS Balmain Tigers and the Sydney Uni Lionesses at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships had a bit of everything.

And it was Balmain who booked a spot in the final four after securing a thrilling 11-10 victory.

Young gun Layla Smith said the Tigers are highly motivated to do well at the tournament.

“We came second last year, so everyone is very hungry for a first this time,” she said.

“Mermaids beat us in a penalty shoot out, so we really want to go better this year.”

The Mermaids look in excellent order if their final eight demolition of UNSW Wests is any indication.

Phoebe McGuire celebrated her birthday with a goal as the Mermaids Pink team beat UNSW Wests 14-2.

“We had a good training camp leading into this and we have all been playing well together here which is good,” said the 18-year-old.

“We are all friends in and out of the water and I think that really helps.”

Sienna Owen, Taafili Taoso, Chelsea Johnson and Phoebe Fredericks all scored two goals each in the win.

Meanwhile, the Polo Bears have won their quarter-final battle with the Drummoyne Devils 12-7.

Horatia Schlect believes the closeness of the Bears has been key to their success to date at the championships.

“We are all really close and we all back each other,” she said.

“We have one new player but the rest of us have played together for a long time.

“And this is our first really big event, so we are really pleased to be in the top four.

Cate Klinge top scored for the Bears with three goals.

In the third quarter-final, MATS Polo beat Melville Marlins 13-9 in a close game.

Melville put on a five-goal third period to stay in the game but we’re unable to reel their American rivals back in.

Dania Innis scored three for Mats Polo in the win.

PREVIEW

Finals fever has hit the Australian youth water polo championships.

The under-18 girls quarter-finals will take centre stage on day three of the tournament, with every game live streamed exclusively by KommunityTV.

The KommunityTV coverage will include seven high-octane matches back-to-back from the main pool at HBF Stadium in Perth.

Brisbane side Mermaids Pink will be determined to continue their undefeated campaign when they face UNSW Wests in the first final.

The Mermaids side, who are the defending champions from last year’s under-18s competition, go into the match as favourites, after finishing top of Pool A and easily defeating Adelaide in their crossover match.

After coming third in Pool D with just one win from three matches, the Drummoyne Devils picked up a shock 10-9 win over Sea Wolf to set up a quarters match against Polo Bears.

They have a tough battle ahead of them, with the Bears topping Pool D and easily defeating Richmond/Mermaids in their crossover match.

An all-Sydney quarter between Sydney Uni Lionesses and UTS Balmain Tigers is sure to be a close battle, with the Lionesses yet to concede a game.

Another undefeated side, MATS Polo from the US, will be looking to keep their streak alive when they take on hometown heroes Melville Marlins.

Richmond/Mermaids and Sea Wolf are set to face off again in an U18 girls play-off match, after Sea Wolf came out on top 17-6 in their initial encounter on day two.
