They are the offspring of Olympic water polo gold medallists, Wallabies, cricketers, rowers and assorted sporting champions set to make a splash at the Australian water polo youth championships.

In the past the likes of Tilly Kearns, daughter of Wallabies gun Phil, AJ Roach, son of NRL tough guy Steve, Bronte Halligan, daughter of NRL legend Daryl, and Gabi Palm, whose father Mitchell was also a Wallaby, have set the pool alight.

Now it’s the turn of a next generation of players with strong sporting bloodlines to shine as the biggest water polo event in Australia kicks off on Sunday in Perth.

Numerous youngsters have followed in their wake of their father and mother to play the sport. Some are doing it for fun, others to hopefully represent their country one day.

In Perth, Sydney Olympic gold medallist Bron Smith and Wallaby Damian Smith will have daughters Indi, 15, and Layla, 17 playing for Balmain.

“They have been playing since since they were around nine of 10,’’ Bron Smith said.

“Indi also played a lot of soccer and Layla was swimming and did a little hockey.

“But they both love water polo.’’

Son Joel, now 20, played rugby at school but also chose water polo and was a member of numerous Australian junior and youth squads in recent times.

Smith is still heavily involved in the sport as an operations manager for Water Polo Australia.

“Damian loves watching water polo,’’ she said.

“He had injuries along the way so I think he’s quite pleased to see they are into water polo.’’
