The teams traded goals before the Phoenix powered away in the third quarter thanks to a six-goal blitz.

A run of five unanswered goals turned a 4-6 deficit into an 11-8 lead at the final change and the hosts held firm to level their season at two wins and two losses.

Skipper Daniel Egan and young gun Daniel Magasanik scored stunning individual goals but the highlight of the match came from goalkeeper Oliver Purcell.

Australia Stingers keeper Alyssa West and Under-20 national keeper Eve Gath backstopped the reigning Australian Water Polo League women’s premier to a comprehensive 22-2 victory over Victoria Phoenix.

West saved two penalty shots in the first half, while Gath was only beaten from the penalty spot and from the field once.

Mariners outlast Phoenix to improve AWL start

The Mariners have made the most of their Victorian roadtrip, improving their record to 2-1 to start the AWL season ahead of their final match-up of the week against Adelaide/Hobart on Sunday.

The men from the west proved too strong for a young and plucky Victorian Phoenix side, flying home with a wet sail in a strong final term.

The Mariners scored five goals to two in the final quarter, with Canadian star Ronen Grosz scoring a blistering hattrick.

Grosz finished the match with five goals, equal with teammate and fellow overseas player Japan’s Kiyomu Date.

It was a match the Phoenix will take plenty of learnings from after they matched it with the Mariners through three terms, going goal for goal with their opposition at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre.

Phoenix’s sophomore star Tyson Mutsch proved why he is one of the rookies on the rise with a hattrick while teammates James Ogilvie-Lee and Daniel Magasanik added two goals a-piece.

Haralabidis helps Marlins bounce back to their best

Ioanna Haralabidis scored five goals, including three in the first quarter, as Fremantle Marlins bounced back from Friday’s heartbreaking loss to Queensland Thunder with a 16-goal Australian Water Polo League demolition of Victoria Phoenix.

Haralabidis was on fire early as the visitors showed no ill effects from their nerve-racking 9-8 loss to Queensland the night before to race away to an early five-goal lead. Indeed, they extended the margin to 10-0 before the Phoenix found the net.

The American star nabbed further goals in the second and fourth quarters to lead her side to a 21-6 victory that sets them up nicely for the early Sunday morning showdown with Adelaide Jets.

Ioanna’s twin sister Stephania was also prominent on the scoresheet with four while Zoe Arancini continued her great form with five of her own.

It took the Phoenix until the last minutes of the second quarter before they scored their first goal through Emily McGowan.

The Phoenix, who were narrow victors over the Jets on Wednesday, have now fallen to two heavy defeats to the two Western Australian teams, and will receive no respite on Sunday when they take on unbeaten title favourites Queensland Thunder.

Dalziel shines as Thunder pass massive test

A masterclass from rising star Kasey Dalziel has kept the Queensland Thunder women’s undefeated streak intact in the Australian Water Polo League.

Dalziel produced a stunning third quarter hattrick for the Thunder to help the Queensland side cruise past the UWA Torpedos 12-6 at Melbourne Aquatic Centre.

The young Torpedos side proved it possesses plenty of fight this season, managing to comeback strong with a four-goal second quarter to level the scores at 4-4 at halftime.

But it just set the stage for the exciting Dalziel, who appeared almost superhuman in the third term, working off the strong lead-up work from the Thunder’s impressive passing game.

Former Australian Stinger Elle Armit, who made her intention of fighting back into the national team set up clear before the AWL season, provided the goods in the middle of the pool for the Thunder scoring a hattrick of her own.

Australian Stingers legend Bronwen Knox did not waste the opportunity against her former club, scoring a hattrick for the Torpedos to give them a sniff at a second-half fightback.

But it wasn’t to be with Dalziel’s hattrick highlighting a blistering six-goal third term for the Thunder girls.

Lethal Ford can’t be stopped on goal

Andrew Ford continued his amazing goalscoring exploits as UWA Torpedoes heaped more pressure on underperforming Queensland Thunder in a one-sided Australian Water Polo League men’s clash on Saturday.

Ford has been in incredible form since shifting east, scoring 15 goals in three games.

His five against Victorian Phoenix on Thursday set up a 16-12 success. He grabbed another five on Friday night against Adelaide Jets in a 16-5 success before completing his week of work with another five against the Thunder.

The Torpedoes may not have made 16 this time but this 12-6 victory was still their best performance of the week.

Ford was unstoppable in the first quarter, scoring a hat-trick as the Torpedoes took a 4-1 lead. Two goals from Jonas de Oliveira Crivella in the second quarter, another from Ford and one from Charlie Emanuel effectively killed off the game.

Queensland have now lost back-to-back games against the best from the west and will be hoping for better luck on Sunday against Victorian Phoenix.

The Torpedoes head back home ahead of the visit of Cronulla Sharks and Hunter Hurricanes next weekend.

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Stingers veterans light up thrilling AWL battle

They have been Australian teammates for a number of years, and both Elle Armit and Zoe Arancini proved their experience in a ding dong battle up and down the Melbourne Aquatic Centre pool.

But in the end it was the Queenslander who enjoyed the last laugh.

The pair traded blows in the centre of the pool at either end, and on several occasions drew their opposite into a foul and exclusion.

The two former Stingers teammates epitomised what was an incredibly close battle between the Queensland Thunder and Fremantle Marlins.

Both sides traded blows across the opening three quarters, but it was the Thunder who found an extra gear in the final term to prevail 9-8 over their rivals.

Arancini, along with Marlins teammate Glencora McGhie, almost spearheaded a late revival, with three late goals to reduce the deficit to only one goal.

Armit finished with one goal and two assists for the Thunder, while teammates Bridget Leeson-Smith and Madeleine Steere scored doubles.

Mariners sing as Thunder snuffed out

The Mariners have continued their impressive start to the AWL season, dispatching of thre Queensland Thunder with ease.

The Torpedos were led by doubles to Dayna O’Leary, Pippa Pedley, Madison Rigo and Glenda Morgan.

The Torpedos have enjoyed a strong week in the pool in Melbourne, taking their current AWL tally to two wins from three games to sit among the top sides in the early part of the tournament.

The Jets remain winless across their opening three games, but have shown enough fight to suggest success is not far around the corner.

Torpedos make short work of the Jets men

The wait for a first victory of the season goes on for Adelaide/Hobart Jets after they were taken apart by a quality UWA Torpedoes side in an Australian Water Polo League men’s clash on Friday afternoon.

Andrew Ford scored five goals and Jonas de Oliveira Crivella grabbed four as the Torpedoes cruised to a 16-5 victory on the back of a seven-goal second quarter and a defensive master class.

The Jets scored first but found themselves 4-1 down just three minutes later.

They rallied to score the final goal of the first term but saw the game slip away late in the second quarter as the Torpedoes went on a goalscoring frenzy to lead 11-3 at the main break.

Finding the net got harder in the second half for both sides, but the game had long been decided by then.

After a first-up draw against Fremantle, UWA have found this long trip east to their liking, beating Victoria Phoenix on Thursday before backing up for this impressive performance.

Things get much tougher on Saturday though when they face Queensland Thunder.

The Jets get Saturday off to lick their wounds before backing up on Sunday to play Fremantle.

Thunder strike with big start in AWL

Reigning Australia Water Polo League Women’s champion Queensland Thunder secured a dominant 23-6 victory over Adelaide-Hobart Jets on Thursday night.

The Thunder fielded six current Australia Stingers in the clash - Ellie Armit, Jessica Emerson, Tenealle Fasala, Bridget Leeson-Smith, Sophie Miliken and Madeleine Steere - and their class showed.

Leeson-Smith and Fasala both scored four goals, while Steere and Miliken netted hat-tricks.

Queensland jumped out to a 7-2 lead at quarter-time, with Tayla Dawkins potting both goals for Adelaide-Hobart.

The lead extended to 14-3 at half-time and was 19-4 at the final change as the premiership favourites flexed their muscle.

National team head coach Paul Oberman said in commentary it was a sign of respect that Queensland didn’t take the foot off the pedal and praised Adelaide-Hobart for fighting out the match.

Dawkins would finish with four goals to continue her strong form for the Jets.

The match was Queensland’s first of the 2023 campaign and sees them jump to fifth on the ladder behind four teams who have all played three games.

Torpedos women make early AWL statement

UWA Torpedoes women’s side has flexed its muscle and secured a first win of the Australian Water Polo League season.

The Western Australia outfit battered hosts Victoria Phoenix, 25-7, at Melbourne Swimming and Aquatic Centre.

A 9-0 first quarter put the game to bed early and the Torpedoes showed no mercy in a dominant victory.

The gulf in class best illustrated by UWA fielding four-time Olympian Bronwyn Knox and current Stinger Pippa Pedley.

Victoria finally got on the board mid-way through the second term through Billie Gifford, ending an 11-goal Torpedoes avalanche.

The Phoenix went goal-for-goal with UWA in the second quarter, going into half-time 14-4, but faded in the second half as the visitors took full control.

Another seven goals in the third term and four more in the fourth competed the rout.

An incredible 11 of 13 Torpedoes got on the scoresheet, with Dayna O’Leary (four) leading the way, while Knox, Pedley, Bridget Cranley and Allegra Childs all netted hat-tricks.

Torpedoes’ Amelia Taboni scored the goal the game with a brilliant long-range strike that found the top corner as the quarter-time siren blew.

Jemma Potts was the best performed Phoenix, scoring a hat-trick.

The win is UWA’s first of the campaign after going down to local rival Fremantle in the opening round of the season.

Torpedos fire up in the cold and wet

Unlike Australia’s most popular summer sport, rain can’t stop water polo.

As cold weather lashed Melbourne, UWA Torpedoes were running hot at Melbourne Swimming and Aquatic Centre in a 16-12 Australian Men’s Water Polo League victory over hosts Victoria Phoenix.

With scores locked at 7-7, seven unanswered Torpedoes goals across the second and third quarters broke the game open.

Tempers flared in the third term as exclusions came thick and fast and UWA’s George Ford was left with blood streaming from a cut below his eye.

His brother, Andrew, was dominant in attack for the Torpedoes, bagging five goals, while Brazillian Jonas Crivella and Uruguan Santiago San Martin were also prolific.

After conceding a 4-0 lead at the start of the game, Victoria finally clicked into gear on the back of a superb Samson Magasanik goal after a strong drive and close-range finish.

The Phoenix levelled the scores at 6-6 and 7-7 in the second quarter but couldn’t stay with their more experienced opponents, shipping three quick goals at the end of the term.

Evan McLean finally broke UWA’s run in the third quarter but there would be no comeback.

Four Phoenix players finished the game fouled out.

Magasanik and skipper Daniel Egan were the best for the Phoenix.

The win opens the Torpedoes account after a 12-12 draw with local rival Fremantle in the opening round.

Thunder nearly blow huge lead

Despite scoring just two goals in the second half, Queensland Thunder have held on for a nail-biting 9-8 win over Adelaide-Hobart Jets in the Australian Men’s Water Polo League.

Individual brilliance from Jets goalkeeper Andrew Cameron kept his team in the game as he made three penalty saves in the second half.

The Thunder had jumped out to a 8-4 lead early in the third quarter but lost momentum when Colombian international Luis Ramirez fouled out shortly after.

Adelaide-Hobart lost Pat O’Neill to a third major foul early in the fourth before Cameron’s heroics, saving back-to-back penalty shots.

Brown’s fourth goal of the game made it a one-goal margin before Will Valentine finally found the back of the net from the six-metre spot.

Sam O’Neill again narrowed the margin to a single goal but the Jets could not find the equaliser to share the points, dropping a second consecutive game.

Will Downes was the star in attack for Queensland, netting four goals, as the Thunder picked up the win in their first game of the AWL season.

WEDNESDAY’S GAMES

Phoenix relief as Jets double AWL bid falls just short

A critical penalty save and two late goals earned Victoria Phoenix a nail-biting 12-10 win over Adelaide-Hobart Jets in an entertaining men’s Australian Water Polo League clash on Wednesday.

With the scores locked at 10-10, Phoenix goalkeeper Olive Purcell came up clutch to deny Nick Madden from the spot before Tyson Mutsch (four goals) and Daniel Egan iced the game with goals in the final minute.

Purcell was brilliant throughout, making a number of key saves during the match.

Replay: KAP7 Cup Tournament Day 4 - Victorian Phoenix v FYFE Adelaide/Hobart Jets (Men)

Victoria’s high press forced Adelaide-Hobart into a number of turnovers as the Phoenix stole balls almost at will.

However, they failed to take full advantage, lacking composure in front of goal on numerous occasions to bomb almost certain goals and keep their opponents in the game.

Victoria took a 6-2 lead early in the third quarter before Adelaide-Hobart surged back into the game with six unanswered goals.

Two pieces of individual brilliance from Ben Brown sparked the Jets.

First, a powerful long-range goal levelled the scores early in the fourth quarter before a goal of the year contender gave the Jets the lead.

Brown, taking the ball on the right wing, skinned his man and then herocketed the ball past Purcell to make it a 9-8 scoreline.

However, Victoria would not be denied.

Jamie Ogilvie-Lee broke the Jets’ run with a close-range finish and Egan put the home team back in front shortly after beating the keeper one-on-one.

Jets skipper Alex Murphy levelled the scores once against at 10-10 and Adelaide-Hobart were on top when New Zealand international Sean Bryant conceded a penalty and fouled out.

In what proved a match-defining moment, Purcell saved Madden’s penalty and Mutsch put the Phoenix ahead of the final time with a strong shot from the left wing.

Nervy times as Phoenix women barely hang on

Victoria Phoenix survived a fourth-quarter comeback from Adelaide-Hobart Jets to claim a 15-14 victory in its AWL women’s season-opener.

The Phoenix were in control for much of the match until the Jets launched a last-gasp surge, scoring five unanswered goals, before falling agonisingly short of a miracle comeback.

With 35 seconds left in the match, the Jets hit the post after controversially being denied a penalty and a final push with five seconds left came up empty.

Replay: KAP7 Cup Tournament Day 4 - Victorian Phoenix v FYFE Adelaide/Hobart Jets (Women)

Phoenix will look to improve its defence on Thursday for its Round 2 clash with UWA Torpedoes after giving away three penalties to keep Adelaide-Hobart in the game.

In attack, Emily McGowan excelled for Victoria, scoring four goals, while Jemma Potts (two goals) and Maddie Morrison also impressed.

The loss of Potts to a third major foul, early in the fourth quarter, impacted the Phoenix’s goal-scoring threat as they struggled to make an impact in the fourth quarter.

Earlier, Victoria had jumped out to a five-goal lead at half-time as McGowan, Potts and Mimi Stoupas all netted twice.

A six-goal run from late in the first to early in the second quarter put the Phoenix in control. However, Adelaide-Hobart would not be denied.

The introduction of Tahlia Scipioni sparked the Jets into action as they clawed back to 13-9 at the final change.

Scipioni completed her hat-trick from the penalty spot as she and Tayla Dawkins (five goals) flipped the game on its head.

Stoupas missed a chance to ice the game for Victoria with 1.20 left on the clock and Adelaide-Hobart charged down the pool.

The Jets were controversially denied a penalty in the dying seconds and Morrison then hit the post as time ran out on the comeback.
