Replay: NSWCHS v ACT (U18 boys) - ASSRL National Championships Day 3

Can the boys from NSW Combined Catholic Colleges go back-to-back or will a stacked Queensland Schoolboys side or the red-hot NSW Combined High Schools have something to say about it?

The ASSRL Nationals returns to action this winter, with every match across the Under-15/Under-16 tournament and the Under-18s tournaments streamed live and exclusively on KommunityTV.

The tournaments will be played across two weeks in late June and early July as the best schools rugby league talents go head-to-head with national pride on the line.

For the second-straight year the Under-15/16 tournament will be held at the Port Macquarie Regional Stadium from June 30-July 5, before the Under-18s tournament kicks off in Coffs Harbour from July 7-12.

The tournaments will include both boys and girls action, with the NSW Combined High Schools girls aiming to go back-to-back in the Under-18s division while Queensland will be confident they have the firepower after taking out the Under-16 crown last year.

Into its second year, the Schoolgirls tournament is expected to go from strength-to-strength following the expansion of the NRL National Schoolgirl Cup this season and the increased opportunities for schoolgirl footballers on the rise.

WHAT’S NEW IN 2024?

With the two tournament’s running back-to-back in regional NSW, it makes for a blockbuster two-week extravaganza of schools’ rugby league.

It also puts the tournament back in the heart of the NRL season, and takes place over two weeks of the NSW school holidays, making it a prime opportunity for holiday-makers on the NSW Mid North Coast to attend.

The Under-18 girls nationals will take on a slightly altered format after last year’s inaugural tournament.

The girls tournament has been divided into pools based on last year’s results, with full length matches played of 20 minutes per half. The 18 Years female tournament will mirror the boys tournament with two semi-finals leading into a Championship decider.

“Last year was the first time we had the girls involved in the ASSRL Championships and it was really a bit of a trial run, we didn’t know what to fully expect,” tournament organiser Anthony Lanskey said.

“We know that a number of our states are still developing, but this year the plan is to bring their program more in line with the boys structure.

“I think the girls in Victoria were a bit of a surprise packet last year, while Western Australia also had several strong performances. The girls game is evolving across the country, so you never know what will happen from year to year.”
