The Herald Sun Shield has seen the likes of former AFL players in Daniel Harford, Mick McGuane, Shane Crawford and Billy Brownless take the field.

In recent times, St Patrick‘s College Ballarat has had great success, reaching grand finals 11 years in a row with the likes of Richmond defender Josh Gibcus taking the field

Ballarat Grammar alumni Ella Friend was another recent performer in the competition before strong performances earned her an opportunity with AFLW side St Kilda where she was one of the youngest to be drafted in the pool of players in 2021 having just made the eligibility date by two days.

News Sport Network managing director Michael Wilkins said KommunityTV‘s exclusive live stream of the Herald Sun Shield was a logical next step in the company’s support of the prestigious tournament.

“For these school-age athletes, the Herald Sun Shield possibly provides the first step towards a career in the AFL and AFLW, so it is fitting KommunityTV will be there at the start of that journey,” he said.

“Over the past 44 years, the Herald Sun Shield has played a key role in development of footballers, some of which have gone on to the game‘s greatest heights.

“News Corp has a proud history of supporting Australian rules footballers at all levels, and this partnership only extends that support.

“We are looking forward to watching the big marks, the matchwinning goals and the best young athletes from across Victoria over the next two months.”

Recruiters have always kept an eye on the competition scouting great young talent including Alex McDonald from St Patrick College Ballarat, who was taken as a number one draft pick in 1988.

St Bede‘s College has had stars of the game come through including Luke Beveridge and Gerard Healy, while more recent guns include Dylan Shiel and Finn Callaghan.

Head of AFL Victoria Ben Kavenagh said: “There is tremendous enthusiasm from schools to see the return of the Herald Sun Shield after two years missed because of the pandemic.”

“It is a competition rich in history and, having been first played in 1977, has provided a platform to showcase so many strong school football programs and players over the years. It also provides boys and girls with a wonderful football experience.

“Having not been able to hold the competition in 2020 or 2021, AFL Victoria is extremely excited to bring the Herald Sun Shield back for the 44th edition.

“I would like to thank the school associations and schools for working with us on planning for 2022. I would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of News Corp, who will be exclusively streaming the competition via the Herald Sun website, providing greater exposure than ever before.”
