PREVIEW: New crop of talent to put name up in lights

The Herald Sun Shield has been a launching pad for some of the AFL’s biggest names including Assumption College’s Billy Brownless and St Patrick’s College, Ballarat’s Mick McGuane.

That pathway has also extended into the women’s game with recent Shield graduates getting picked up in the AFLW draft.

Rowville Secondary’s Amber Clarke was the most recent Herald-Sun Shield player to progress to the AFL after Essendon selected her at pick four in last month’s AFLW Draft.

Melbourne Girls Grammar had J‘Noemi Anderson taken at pick 16 to St Kilda in the same draft.

A new crop of young talents will get their opportunity to put their own name in lights as the Herald Sun Shield finals series kicks off with the girls intermediate and senior semi-finals on Wednesday.

And KommunityTV will be your golden ticket to watch all four matches live and exclusive.

Girls’ matches kick off KommunityTV’s finals coverage today with games being played at Craigeburn, Sandringham and Geelong.

Both Rowville Secondary College and Melbourne Girls Grammar will contest the senior semi-final today at 2pm minus their star players who are on AFL lists despite being still at school.

Rowville captain Tylah Mills said it was amazing to train with the number four AFLW draft pick leading into the finals.

“Amber has been amazing to train and play with,” Mills said.

“She sets an impossible standard so it’s really good to train with her and bounce ideas off these AFL people and develop alongside them.”

Rowville Secondary have former Essendon 238-gamer Darren Bewick guiding the team as their coach.

Mills also said it was exciting for the school to have a team made up of girls only this season for the first time.

Melbourne Girls Grammar co-captain Bella Boffa said it was a thrill to be back playing again after Covid and against schools they wouldn’t typically play against.

“The last time we played was year nine for Amelia and I and we lost the grand final so this year it’s really good to end our year 12 schooling with being able to play in the Herald Sun Shield finals,” Boffa said.

“I think it is really exciting to be playing a school that we haven’t come up against ever really so we don’t know what Rowville will be like, but since they are a sports school they will obviously have high expectations.”

Amelia Kogler, who is known for her Dustin Martin-like fend offs, said the numbers in girls footy has grown at the school making the younger players valuable to the team.

“A lot of the younger girls are really strong because they have played from a much younger age, they have gone through Auskick and a full footy program,” Kogler said.
