Maribyrnong confirmed its status as a school to watch in the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy with its boys and girls sides putting on a scoring show. Watch all the Albury Football Festival replays here.

Melbourne visitors Maribyrnong College have progressed to the quarter-finals in both boys and girls competitions following dominant displays at the Albury Football Festival.

Eight matches from the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy tournament were exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV across Wednesday and Thursday.

DAY TWO MATCHES

Boys Cup Round of 16

Maribyrnong College is off to the Bill Turner Cup quarter-finals.

The 2012 champions remain on track for a shot at claiming their second title after a commanding 4-0 win over Canberra’s St John Paul II College in their Round of 16 clash on Thursday.

After easing past Griffith’s Marian College on Wednesday, it was a much improved showing for the Melbourne-based sports academy.

Besian Kutleshi underlined his potential with a dominant display.

The midfielder set up the opening goal of the game, unleashing Mark Reec with a inch-perfect through ball.

Kutleshi got himself on the scoresheet with a strong header, left all alone at a corner kick, he found the far post the ease.

He finished off the game in the second half with a cool finish from the edge of the box.

Dion Toro was the other goalscorer, slotting a penalty kick.

Maribyrnong will play St Gregory College (Campbelltown) in a quarter-final in Albury later this month.

The national finals then kick off at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Tuesday, September 5.

Boys Cup Consolation

Marian College has finished its Bill Turner Cup campaign on a high note.

The Griffith school claimed a strong 6-0 win over Dubbo College in its consolation final on the final day of Albury’s Festival of Football on Thursday.

After going down in its Round of 32 tie 7-0 to Maribyrnong College, it was a strong response from the team.

Kobe Ellis starred for Marian, scoring the first two goals of the game.

His second was a brilliant piece of individual play, keeping the ball in at the byline before dribbling through three Dubbo defenders and smashing the ball home.

Antonio Torino and Jonah Serafin also got on the scoresheet before goalkeeper Jack Johns scored a spectacular long-range free-kick that slipped straight through his opposite number’s fingers.

Girls Trophy Round of 16

An incredible four goals from Alexis Pantazopoulos has powered Maribyrnong College into the Bill Turner Trophy quarter-finals.

The Melbourne-based sports academy continued its dominant form with a thumping 16-0 win over Griffith’s Marian College in Thursday’s Round of 16 clash at Albury’s Jelbart Park.

Maribyrnong stormed to an 7-0 win in its Round of 32 match on Wednesday but went to another level and will enter the quarter-finals as warm favourites.

The powerhouse was 8-0 up at half-time and doubled its advantage in a ruthless display.

After two goals in the previous match, Pantazopoulous scored two goals in each half to take her tally to six for the two-day Festival of Football.

Mia Crawford, Irena Razumic and Olivia Nicolazzo all scored a brace.

Leyla Hussein, Poppy O’Keefe, Ella Lee, Analise Petersen and Alana Birdahic also got their names on the scoresheet in the rout.

Maribyrnong will play the winner of Holy Spirit Bellambi and Trinity Catholic College Goulburn a quarter-final later this month.

The national finals begin at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility, outside Newcastle, on Tuesday, September 5.

Girls Trophy Consolation

Mudgee’s St Matthew’s will enjoy its long trip home after securing a 1-0 win over Albury High School in its Bill Turner Trophy consolation final on Thursday.

Bessie Nicholson scored the decisive goal to end the central west NSW school’s campaign at Albury’s Festival of Football on a high note.

After going down 7-0 in its Round of 32 match against Maribyrnong College, it was an impressive response from the girls.

Taking the ball in her own half, Nicholson charged forward and found Amia Moussa.

Nicholson continued to charge forward and Moussa’s through ball put her behind the defence and she finished calmly past the goalkeeper.

DAY 1 MATCHES

Girls Trophy

Maribyrnong College has put on a goalscoring masterclass to progress to the Bill Turner Trophy Round of 16.

A Leyla Hussein hat-trick sparked a dominant 7-0 win over Mudgee’s St Matthew’s at Albury’s Festival of Football at Jelbart Park.

Alana Hartinger, Ella Lee, Mia Crawford and Alexis Pantazopoulos also found the back of the net in a superb team effort.

Hussein scored the pick of the goals with an ambitious free kick that sailed over the St Matthew’s goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Maribyrnong was five goals to the good at half-time before taking the foot of the pedal in the second half.

The Melbourne-based sports academy will now face Griffith’s Marian College in the next round for a chance to go to Newcastle for the tournament finals.

REPLAY: Marian Catholic College v Albury High School

Serena O’Connor was the hero as Marian College claimed a tough, tense 1-0 win over Albury High.

With little more than 10 minutes left in the clash, O’Connor found the match-winner.

Mica Agresta intercepted the ball in midfield and released O’Connor down the right wing.

Holding off her defender, O’Connor unleashed a shot into the roof of the net to put her team in front.

Albury had a couple of late chances but couldn’t find the pass or finish needed to score the equaliser.

Boys Cup

Maribyrnong College’s hopes of a second Bill Turner Cup title remain on track.

The Melbourne-based school squeezed past Griffith’s Marian College 1-0.

Winston Ashburner scored the decisive goal in the first half.

Taking the ball in midfield, Ashburner released Dejun Trncic down the left flank, before running onto a return ball

Lucky not to give away a foul for fighting through a defender, he then calmly slotted past the Marian goalkeeper to give his team the lead.

Maribyrnong had the ball in the back of the net in just the second minute of the match, but the goal was ruled out for off-side.

They controlled the majority of the game as Marian struggled to break down a compact midfield and defence, featuring players involved in A-League academies.

There was little in the St John Paul II v Dubbo College contest.

Maribyrnong will now face Canberra’s St John Paul II College for a chance to go to Newcastle and the tournament finals.

An early double strike proved the key for St John Paul II.

Facing Dubbo College, SJP were on the board in just the third minute of the match at Albury’s Jelbart Park.

A long-range shot landed perfectly at the feet of Carter Connell and he had no problem tapping in the simple finish.

St John Paul doubled their lead not long after thanks to Xavier Bennett.

REPLAY: St Paul II Catholic College v Dubbo College South Campus

A swift counter-attack saw Bennett latch onto a pass down the left flank, beat a defender and then the goalkeeper at the near post in a fine individual effort.

However, Dubbo College were back in the game just six minutes later.

Logan Johnson was released up the middle by a brilliant through ball, cut back inside to shake free of his defender, but had his shot saved by SJP keeper, Keaton Li Chang.

Li Chang stopped Johnson again point blank but it was third time lucky for the Dubbo striker as the ball fell to him once more for an easy finish.

Dubbo pushed for an equaliser but couldn’t find a way past Li Chang.

Maribyrnong College is looking to end a decade-long drought and create some new history this year.

The school’s boys and girls teams will travel to Albury this week for the Bill Turner Cup and Trophy Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches.

Kommunity TV will livestream all matches from the two-day Festival of Football as well as the Queensland and Northern NSW finals and national finals through August.

A win on Thursday (Rd-of-16) will see Maribyrnong qualify for the quarter finals where another win would seal a trip to Newcastle for the semi-finals and, potentially, a shot at a championship.

Maribyrnong College won the boys title in 2012 and has finished third in 2014 and 2015, while the girls made the semis in 2017, finishing fourth.

Some of the best U15 school teams await in Albury.

Maribyrnong will face Griffith’s Marian Catholic College in the boys Round of 32 and Mudgee’s St Matthews Catholic School in the girls.

Matildas stars Alanna Kennedy and Caitlin Foord were rivals at the Bill Turner Trophy.

Hopes are high for teams packed with A-League academy and Football Victoria National Training Centre talent.

Team manager Adrian Mazzarella said it was an exciting opportunity for his student athletes.

“They don’t get to play together much, so all the players are excited to put all their training into practice,” he said.

“Our program is not designed necessarily for competition, it’s more for individual development.

“Our female team is almost 50-50 Year 9 and Year 8s whereas our boys team is probably a quarter under-14s (Year 8).

“They’re all heavily involved in football outside school, a lot of them are at an A-League academy or the girls at the state NTC program, if not at NPL clubs.

“The boys team have a number at Melbourne Victory, Western United and Melbourne City, all three A-League clubs are represented.”

Former Young Socceroos and Matildas coach Brody Crane will lead the boys team, while Altona Magic NPL technical director Nick Viaggio will oversees the girls campaign.

Maribyrnong College’s Round of 32 matches can be watched exclusively on Kommunity TV on Wednesday. Both matches start at 2pm.
