Melbourne Victory academy player Mikka Kolle will lead the Victorian school into battle in the time-honoured Bill Turner Trophy finals this week.

It is the first time Rowville has made it to the national finals in the knockout competition, where they will meet Central Coast Sports College in the tournament’s semi-finals on Tuesday.

A win in the semi-finals will send Rowville through to a grand final on Wednesday while a loss in the 30-minute half games will result in a playoff for third spot.

The Bill Turner Cup and Trophy knockout competition is contested by schools from Cairns to Melbourne at the Under 15s age level.

Rowville College are coming into this year’s finals series in hot form, having won five games in a row to make it through.

They defeated Maribyrnong College 2-0, Taylor Lakes College 4-1, St John’s College Dubbo 5-1, Albury High 5-0 and St John Paul II ACT 6-1 in the quarter final to make it to the finals.

Kolle, who will be stationed out on the right wing for Rowville, has been a crucial to the side’s run to the national finals.

Rowville coach Melissa Maizels said the Southern United and Melbourne Victory Elite Girls footballer has been a great leader of the team.

“Mikka has been an immense leader for this team both in her communication and her presence on the field,” Maizels said.

“She is a player who leads by example and her work rate is second to none.

“It was no doubt Mikka was deserving of the role given the girls themselves elected her to lead them through this tournament.”

The very first Bill Turner Cup was played in 1979 with the Bill Turner Trophy, then under the banner of the NSW CHS, first contested in 1991.

Lloyd Turner, the son of the late Bill Turner OA said the competition was well respected across the football community.

“Over the years the Bill Turner School Football competitions have evolved to the point where the competition is held in high regard in the Australian football community and is recognised as one of the largest team sport competitions in the world,” Turner said.
