GRAND FINAL REPORTS
Under-15 Boys - Albury-Wodonga 2 def Bendigo 1
Albury-Wodonga have held on in controversial fashion to take out the first piece of senior boys silverware at the CLFA Country Championships.
The red and black brigade were at their best in the decider against Bendigo, but it was a win that almost wasn’t after confusion around a late penalty.
After kicking clear to a 2-0 lead midway through the second half, Bendigo fought their way back into the game after a handy piece of clean-up work off a free kick.
In the final seconds of the game Bendigo were awarded a penalty that would have leveled the scores, and had booted it into the back of the net before the referee called for a retake.
The official had been in the process of handing a yellow card to a defender for dissent, and had not blown the whistle to instruct the penalty taker to strike the ball.
Albury’s goalkeeper dived full stretch to keep out the second attempt at the penalty and sew up the silverware for the border town.
KommunityTV apologises for a technical glitch which caused our in game scoreboard to show the wrong score throughout the second half.
Under-18 Boys - Sunraysia 2 def LaTrobe Valley 1
In a thrilling under-18 boys decider, Sunraysia escaped with the championship after a tight 2-1 victory over LaTrobe Valley.
A double to centre forward Christian Polifrone — as well as possibly the best post goal celebration — proved the difference for the Sunraysia club.
It was a quiclk blast off the second half kick-off, and a poor defensive lapse, that cost LaTrobe Valley in the cracking contest.
A missed swing at the ball from their centre back opened the door for an easy one-on-one that was pounced on by the Sunraysia attack.
The boys in purple refused to die wondering, despite being down by two goals on the scoreboard, and fought their way back into the clash late.
A goal of a set piece set up a thrilling 10 minutes of all out attack from LaTrobe Valley, but it was a gritty Sunraysia who bunkered down and repelled every onslaught sent their way.
Under-16 Boys - Sunraysia 2 def Albury-Wodonga 1
Sunraysia scored an exciting win in the under-16s grand final following a goal scoring blitz in the opening half.
Both teams scored in the opening 10 minutes, but a late goal in the first half proved the difference as Sunraysia held on in the final stages to topple Albury-Wodonga 2-1.
It was the pace of the Sunraysia wings that proved the difference with nthe boys in yellow and green scoring twice off the back of swift counterattacking long balls.
It was a blazing start to the game as Sunraysia went ahead with an exciting run in behgind the defence in the sixth minute, only for Albury-Wodonga to hit back in the 10th.
Albury-Wodonga fought bravely iun the second half and had several opportunities to overturn the defecit but couldn’t quite land the final blow.
Under-14 Boys - Albury 0 drew Ballarat 0
The CLFA Championships have ended in fitting fashion as nothing could split the teams of Albury and Ballarat in the under-14s final.
In a match that was end-to-end from the opening whistle, neither team could find the elusive breakthrough.
It was not for a lack of trying, with a flurry of ball movement and cutting runs from both sides.
But in the end it was the defence of Albury and Ballarat which told the tale of the match.
Both side’s scrambled brilliantly at the back and prevented any chances finding the back of the net.
Even a full extra time couldn’t split the two sides who ended up sharing the spoils in the grand final.
RE-LIVE THE ACTION FROM MYERS RESERVE
Under-14 Girls Final: Geelong 3 def Albury-Wodonga 0
Hometown heroes Geelong have claimed the first piece of senior silverware at the CLFA Country Championships with a dominant performance against Albury-Wodonga.
Geelong’s under-14 girls showed their prowess on goal with a 3-0 win in the under-14 girls grand final.
Having finished the tournament undefeated, and with an impressive 13 point goal differential, Geelong were always going to prove hard to beat in the final.
The home side scored two quick goals early in the clash, and never relented on their pursuit of the title.
Albury-Wodonga refused to go away in the decider, and fought valiantly to the final whistle, but could not come up with the answers to Geelong’s constant pressure on goal.
Under-16 Girls Final: Albury-Wodonga 6 def Bendigo 0
The red and black army were in scintillating form in the girls under-16 decider to claim a 6-0 win over rivals Bendigo.
Albury were quick out of the blocks in the decider at Myers Reserve and never looked back as they scored goals at will in a thrilling first half.
Albury scored four goals in the first half and almost had a fifth after a cracking long range effort smashed off the cross-bar.
Bendigo never dropped their heads across the match, but they struggled to match the pace and ball movement of their rivals.
The win for Albury was capped off by a monster 30-yard volley to winger No. 11.
Under-18 Girls Final: Geelong 2 def LaTrobe Valley 0
A second-half double to Geelong striker Mia McCoach-Cripps has delivered ultimate glory to Geelong in the CLFA Under-18 Girls Country Championships.
But it was a win that belonged to their defensive unit and a courageous goalkeeper.
The Geelong back four were peppered relentlessly by the LaTrobe Valley attack throughout the first half, but they stood tall to carry a 0-0 scoreline into the halftime break.
It was unsurprising that there was little to split the two teams after they had both finished the weekend’s regular rounds with five wins from their six games. They had also shared the spoils in their two encounters over the weekend with a surprising 3-3 combined scoreline.
A penalty early in the second-half gifted the home side their first real chance on goal and it turned the tide the way of Geelong.
LaTrobe Valley rarely had the ball in their opposition’s half throughout the second term, and eventually would have their defenses cracked again late in the contest.
It capped off a great weekend for the hometown club who also took out the under-14 girls final earlier in the day at Myers Reserve.
