New South Wales have exploded out of the blocks as expected as they endeavour to defend their titles in both age groups at the Emerging Matildas Championships in Sydney.
NSW Sky opened their campaign with two rousing victories in each division to confirm they will be a force.
NSW Navy did not play in the under-16s but beat the highly competitive Malaysian outfit in a tight contest.
Northern NSW kicked off with a draw and a win, but NSW Country wasn’t so fortunate, going down in both age groups.

WHAT WE LEARNED …
PACE AND PRECISION
Queensland Maroon excitement machine Sarena Ibrahim will be a force to be reckoned with after an opening double against NSW Country signalled a promising campaign.
Possessing blistering pace, Ibrahim, ever the opportunist, pounced on two pinpoint passes before outmaneuvering the opposition keeper to score twice and set up the comfortable win.
The 2-1 scoreline was probably a little flattering for NSW Country, with the ball camped in their territory after halftime.
Ibrahim’s pace and smarts are sure to prove more than a handful for her under-15 Group B rivals in the coming days.
Queensland Maroon playmaker Montana Corrie also stood out with her express speed and smarts, while Xiana Ludwig and Rani Sharma had their moments. Melanie Regina La Frentz, too, was very effective on the wing.
Phoebe Gordon did drag one back for NSW Country against the run of play in the final minute, but they were clearly outplayed for most of the contest.
DEVIL OF DAY FOR TASSIE
Spare a thought for Tasmania after their baptism of fire on the opening day at Valentine Sports Park.
Coming up against the reigning titleholder New South Wales in both the under-15 and under-16 age groups on day one was always going to be a big ask.
Tasmania gave a good account of themselves against powerhouse NSW Sky in the their under-16 engagement on Field 1 before eventually succumbing 2-0.
But their under-15 assignment on Field 3 against the same outfit was a far different proposition when they were regally thumped 10-0.
Let’s hope they have better luck when they take on South Australia in both age groups on day two.
JAMMED LEADERBOARD ALREADY
It’s difficult to imagine that race for the tournament’s under-15 golden boot equivalent could have possibly intensified after day one, but it has.
NSW Sky players Madena Moussa and Jada Taylor both scored trebles in their 10-0 smashing of Tasmania, while teammate Sophie Aungle finished with two.
Zoe Goncalves was another multiple scorer as she found the net twice in Victoria White’s 3-0 victory over Northern Territory. To add to the traffic jam, Western Australia’s Savanna Glavovic also scored a brace against NSW in their 4-0 result.
In the under-16 age group, only Queensland Maroon Sarena Ibrahim scored on more than one occasion, with goals either side of halftime in her side’s 2-0 victory against NSW Country.
But with pace to burn, don’t be surprised if that number for Ibrahim quickly goes up.
PREVIEW
New South Wales’ campaign to retain the two Emerging Matildas Championships titles will begin on Tuesday as they welcome the country’s best to Sydney.
The host state was victorious in both the under-15 and under-16 age groups in 2024 and is set to be among the favourites once again when matches kick off from 11am at Valentine Sports Park.
KommunityTV will exclusively live stream every match of the championships from July 15-20.
Broadcast action begins with 16 matches across three fields on a big opening day.
Visiting nation Malaysia, which also competed in last week’s Emerging Socceroos Championships, is set to bookend the day on Field 3 when it takes on NSW Navy at 11am and Victoria White at 6.30pm.
The host’s best chances for the titles are likely to come in the form of NSW Sky, which will tackle Tasmania in U16 and U16 fixtures on Fields 1 and 3, both at 3.30pm.
Opening the action on Field 2 will be the Charles Perkins XI Indigenous invitational side against Victoria White at 11am.
There will also be plenty of eyes on the same pitch at 3.30pm and 5pm when South Australia and Northern NSW face off in back-to-back fixtures.
The latter came ever so close to the U16 title last year, falling to NSW in the final.
Every match of the Emerging Matildas Championships will be broadcast live and exclusive from July 15-20.
For the second straight year KommunityTV and News Corp Australia have partnered with Football Australia to bring the nation’s flagship underage national championships to life on the small screen.
