The Melbourne Tigers arrive at the Under-18 Club Championships in Perth with “unfinished business”.

Fresh off winning the Victorian Junior Basketball League Under-18s title on Saturday night, one of Australia’s most famous clubs is ready to take on the country’s best.

The Victorian champions have taken all before them this season, with coach Grant Francis setting his sights on a ‘triple crown’ including the Eltham-Dandenong tournament and National Junior Classic.

A win at the inaugural Under-18 Club Championships in Perth would put the icing on a perfect year for the Tigers.

Every match from the Basketball Australia Under-18 Club National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from September 17-22.

Francis been blessed with talent in the Tigers ranks with his team featuring Victoria Metro and Country representatives Josie Agnew, Isobelle Wightman, Tayli DiMarco, Indi Schwarz and Krystal Arnason.

He said one of the keys to success had been finding the right balance.

“We try rotate the starting five based on the opposition and scouting them,” Francis said.

“Before tryouts at the start of the season, a lot of the girls had played against each other at representative level but not together.

“My assistant coach Tracey (Wightman) plays a key role in helping me to get the rotations right.

“The energy among the girls is really good heading to Perth. We’ve got some unfinished business to finish with another trophy.”

Wightman looms as one of the players to watch among the girls competition in Perth.

She arrives in Western Australia hot on the heels of an MVP performance in the VJBL grand final against Nunawading.

“Coming off the VJBL loss last year, she’s been really driven to help her team succeed,” Francis said.

“She’s put in a lot of gym work, one-on-one sessions to help improve her game.

“She still has a lot to learn but is determined to get better every time she’s out on the court.”

Francis said the introduction of the U18 Club Championships was something he was excited for.

Given the success of the same format in the Under-14 age group, which will also be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV next week, he hopes it is here to stay.

“It’s a great idea,” he said.

“It gives the girls an opportunity to represent their club on the national stage and finish off their hard work as a group.”
