Minor premiers Cygnet completed a wonderful 2024 in some style as they ruthlessly blew apart the Lindisfarne challenge to win the SFL Seniors Grand Final.

Jesse Cowen kicked four goals and Matthew Fletcher, Toby Cowen and Jack Tammens two each as The Port found their groove after a sluggish opening to take the match 16.9 (105) to 7.9 (51).

A 39-1 second quarter run proved the difference and gave Cygnet the freedom to enjoy the occasion.

They extended their advantage to 44 points at the final change before kicking five more goals late on to put a definitive stamp on the performance.

Sorell are the SFL Reserves champions for 2024 after they knocked over minor premiers Brighton by nine points.

Goals may have been in limited supply (only six were kicked), but there was still plenty of tension in this as the Eagles held their shape in a final quarter where only two behinds were scored.

Billy Pace and Cody Neads kicked two goals each for the victors while Jordan Percey landed the only two goals for Brighton.

PREVIEW

While they proved to be the comeback kings in last year’s decider, Cygnet coach Lachy Watt is hoping a more balanced 120 minutes of football will deliver his side back-to-back flags against Lindisfarne on Saturday.

The competition’s two best teams will do battle in the 2024 SFL Grand Final at North Hobart Oval with Watt’s side not only hoping to win a second consecutive premiership, but also atone for their defeat in the 2022 grand final against the Two Blues.

The SFL Senior decider will headline a big double bill of grand final streaming action on KommunityTV, which gets underway with the Reserves grand final. The action will be broadcast on delay, check out the full schedule below.

Saluting in what was dubbed ‘the miracle in the mud’ last season, Cygnet executed a 67-point turnaround against Huonville Lions after booting 10 goals to one in the second-half.

While Watt says they can take confidence out of charging home late 12 months ago, he stressed they needed to be on from the first bounce on Saturday.

“It’s an interesting one (because) I think the belief that came from last year is that the game is never over regardless of the score,” Watt said.

“It gives us the confidence that we can do anything no matter what the scoreboard looks like (but) a big emphasis for us this week is just going to be playing a full four quarters. In finals you can’t afford to give anyone a head start (despite what happened last year) because the game can really get out of your hands pretty quickly, so starting well is going to be super important.”

The Port will head in as favourites given their undefeated record against Lindisfarne this season with the two sides fighting out a thrilling finish in the qualifying final two weeks ago.

Despite a late charge from the Two Blues, Cygnet held on to win by one point to advance straight through to Saturday’s clash with the Two Blues defeating last year’s grand finalists Huonville to get another crack.

While that 3-0 record gives them confidence heading in, Watt says it matters little on football’s biggest day.

“I think any grand final is a real 50-50 game, so regardless of how the season’s gone, it’s pretty irrelevant, to be honest,” he said.

After withstanding a valiant fightback last weekend, Lindisfarne skipper Aiden Webster is confident their grand final experience will hold them in good stead with star midfielder Sam Adams set to be recalled.

“Most of the guys have played in a senior grand final,” Webster said.

“I think experience will definitely benefit us. They’ve got a lot of young blokes, so whether they haven’t been in this position before or nerves get to them, I think it will definitely help us, but at the end of the day, it’s probably not going to get us over the line.”

In the Reserves grand final the high-flying Brighton Robins will clash with a Sorell side full of confidence after shocking Huonville Lions in last weekend’s preliminary final.
