Wanderers salvaged a draw with a kick on the final siren against a Palmerston outfit that brought all the dominated the opening quarters with newfound pace.
The Magpies looked set for a rare victory in the 2024-25 season when they stormed to a dominant first half lead, but a lightning break disruption swung all momentum in the other direction.
Palmerston were 20 points at that stage in the third quarter, but watched as their lead dissipated until a Joel Cubillo behind, which was sailing in the air as the siren went, made it 7.10 (52) – all.
Palmerston only registered one win before the season break, but the return of previously Essendon listed Jayden Davey, and Eddie Betts joining the coaching crew, helped inspire a visible lift.
The side’s pace was noticeably improved against a Wanderers side that had won three of their past five and put 14 goals past Palmerston last time the sides met.
Davey as well as Waylon Davey and Alijah Davey brought that tempo, but it was the performance of some of their big men, particularly Tristen Waack, that helped seal the early lead.
Ryan Warfe and Jonty Patrick were star performers in the defensive zone, while captain Shaun Wilson was everywhere giving his side plenty to work with.
Wanderers felt the loss of some of their big recruits such as Cody Leggett and Billy Crofts, and were unable to take real advantage of any go forward.
Lightning briefly threatened to call the game 16 minutes into the third term when the game was put on pause at a stage Palmerston were 20 points ahead.
The Magpies would have hoped the game was called then and there, but it resumed shortly after with Wanderers returning the better side with quick scores from Jack Sinclair and Trewin.
Palmerston didn’t kick another goal for the remainder of the game despite some significant chances, with Muk Muks skipper Mitchel Taylor playing a strong spoiler role.
Wanderers were inspired by the switch in momentum with Sinclair and Josh Muraca both finding plenty of the ball, the former becoming the game’s only multiple goal scorer.
Chances kept coming weakening the Palmerston lead, but they appeared to have it free when it was down to just one, only for Cubillo to burst forth with a last ditch effort and kick the definitive score.
For coach Aaron Motlop it wasn’t the result he or his side wanted heading in, but he was proud of the character shown in the second half.
“We were completely outplayed in the first half, Palmerston was super all game, but it shows the character of the group we’ve got to fight back,” he said.
“The fact they can turn that around and kick five goals to one after half time is something we can build on, but if it was a dry day with no delay it could have been a different story again.
“We had no fly-ins, so it shows the calibre of the group we have here to fight pretty deep and I’m pretty proud of how the boys reacted, even though it’s an empty one to come away with a draw.”
Palmerston coach Mark Tyrrell was similarly disappointed not to seal the deal, but took it as a learning experience for his young group.
“We’re still so young and learning, we’re not used to winning so it’s a struggle with expectations when good sides come back at you,” he said.
“As much as it hurts this has to be a learning experience for us and next time we’re in that situation it’s one we have to close out.
“Because we’ve been losing heavily it’s sometimes hard to see the improvement but that first half has been coming for a while and our stronger games before Christmas gave us some belief.
“Beyond that the boys just worked really hard in the break having realised when staying close for long periods we’re not as far off as some of the results show.”

PREVIEW
Wanderers run of form might have hit a Tiger-shaped speed bump before Christmas, but the Muk Muks will be determined to start the New Year on the right foot.
Sitting two wins outside the top five, Wanderers have a chance to claw back the difference when they clash with a struggling Palmerston in Round 12.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 2.30pm on Sunday.
Wanderers resurgence, which includes three wins from the past five games, has been driven by the on-field work ethic of recruit Billy Crofts.
The Muk Muks will hope they get the disposal machine back in time for Round 12 after he missed their last-round loss to Nightcliff.
Josh Muraca has also featured plenty of times among the team’s best list while Jak Trewin is leading the way on the scoring end.
The Magpies will be hoping the mid-season break brings some renewed fortunes to the Palmerston-based club.
While the results haven’t shown on the scoreboard, the Magpies have not lost their fighting spirit, even keeping step with premiership frontrunners Southern Districts for three terms last round.
The club has also handed out a few debuts across the season so far including to three of the club’s best young talents in Hayden Sampson, Jas Lang and Kyan Ellis, so the groundwork is clearly being laid for the future.
Watch the full replay at the end of the game.
