A masterclass performance from Nightcliff onballer Brandan Parfitt and the failure of PINT to score a goal until well into the third quarter ensured the Tigers remained in the minor premiership hunt.
Although the Greenants rallied late in the third and throughout the fourth terms, a more polished, although at times wasteful home side had the game under control and ran out 13.13 (91) to 5.3 (33) victors.
A typically clever goal from Boyd Bailey at the three-minute mark of the first got the Tigers underway and when Zac Derksen followed soon after it reflected the Nightcliff early dominance.
Under siege, the PINT defence closed ranks, but equally, a watertight Nightcliff back half effectively snuffed out any attacking Greenant forward forays.
Lachlan Tardrew got the home side away to the perfect start in the second with a goal inside the first minute and with team confidence on a high and playing in front of their opponents, Blake Launer snared the second for Nightcliff soon after.
Derksen was unstoppable around the goal square and with his second for the term, led is side to a 40-point lead at the long break.
Derksen got into the action early in the third when he ran into an open goal and made no mistake.
Then it finally happened – a warranted relayed free kick to PINT forward Harry Thompson who goaled from the top of the square for his team’s first of the game at the seven-minute mark.
Another in the third and three in the last was some improvement but the game was essentially over at half time.
Effective throughout the game was rangy Tiger forward Zac Derksen and he is happy to play his part for the team as the major attacking focus where his marking, pace and aggression are assets.
“It looks like I will be playing more up forward now with the inclusion of players like Parfitt in the midfield, so I think that is my role from now on,” Derksen said.
“I copped an unhealthy tackle in the second quarter which didn’t please me, so I reacted – you have got the fly the flag sometimes but that is all part of the game.
“The team is closing down now as finals approach and there is probably two or three to come in so places are up for grabs and game time and training performance will be crucial for selection.”

PREVIEW
Nightcliff returned to the NTFL after an extended break with a bang, beating reigning premiers St Mary’s and jumping into the top three.
Now the Tigers have a chance to cement that double-chance spot when they take on seventh-placed PINT on Saturday at Nightcliff Oval.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the clash from 7.30pm.
Coming off the Christmas break and then the bye, Nightcliff were strong across the ground and most importantly composed in finishing their chances when taking on the side that beat them in last year’s grand final.
Sean Hunter and Brandan Parfitt were brilliant through the midfield for the Tigers, while Lachlan Tardrew was another who stepped up to the challenge.
Equally as impressive was their work in defence shutting down all the big threats of St Mary’s and limiting premier goal scorer Jackson Calder to just one goal in his 100th match.
All of this poses a significant challenge for PINT, who despite claiming a win last round are all but confirmed to be out of the finals race.
Cameron Wilson and Elliot Chalmers were strong again against the Buffaloes and there’s a few others who have made their mark across the ground.
But again they suffered in front of goal at Cazalys Arena, a frequent issue for the Greenants since the start of the season which they will need to address to be any chance of toppling the Tigers.
