Geelong Falcons will be hoping Lizzie Dowling brings her heroics in attack once again when they take on Gippsland in an all-important NAB League clash this weekend.

The Falcons clash will be live streamed by the Geelong Advertiser and Herald Sun as part of our season-long commitment to the AFL NAB League girls.

Rising youngster Dowling was the star with five goals, including kicking the sealer in the final minute, in a new position up forward against Murray Bushrangers last weekend.

Geelong Falcons improved their record to 1-1 after her two late goals last weekend to pinch a four-point win.

It helped the rising star take out top honours in the Herald Sun’s NAB League team of the week for Round 2.

Geelong talent lead Tom Lonergan said Dowling “dominated” and would remain stationed in attack for the rest of the year after playing as a defender in 2021.

“Probably could have kicked seven or eight to be honest and had 24 or 25 touches as well,” he said.

“We’ve really loved her first two games, especially the one on the weekend. She clearly won the game for us.”

Lonergan said Dowling was “really stiff” to not be drafted last year.

“She’s a very aggressive type of player that when the ball’s in her space, she just goes in and gets it and doesn’t really bother who’s in her way,” he said.

“To be able to show another part of her game going forward and being a real focal point, you’d think if she can put some strong performances together, she’d be a chance.”

Dowling will need to step up after Falcons vice-captain Ash Van Loon hobbled off with a knee injury in the win over Murray.

Scans cleared her of a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament — a relieving outcome after initial fears she would miss the remainder of 2022.

“Initially we thought the worst and then the scans showed the ACL is still intact but there’s some other stuff going on,” Lonergan said.

“We just don’t know the extent of the damage yet. She’ll definitely miss this week and we won’t know the full extent until she sees the doctor.”

Lonergan said it was difficult to predict how many games the Vic Country squad member would miss.

“We don’t know what the actual injury is and what’s required, whether it’s surgery or just sort of rehab,” he said.

“We’ll just wait and see what comes after that.”
