With the word “history” underlined on the whiteboard, Parade coach Ricky Dyson urged his side to write themselves into school folklore.

It had been 25 long years since Parade had saluted in the Herald Sun Shield and Dyson’s group wanted to be the group to end that drought.

On Wednesday afternoon, Parade did just that, eclipsing Maribyrnong, 12.9 (81) to 7.6 (48).

“Such a strong history in terms of our school’s ability to win Herald Shields back in the day,” Dyson said post game.

“We were really known for how strong we were, and we want to get back to that.

“It’s been 25 years since we have had the chance to win one and we spoke about this group wanting to be the ones that were able to break the drought – that’s why that’s up there.”

The win didn’t come easy, particularly during the second term.

Parade was reduced to 17 men after a brazen sling tackle and Maribyrneong took full advantage, kicking two goals in the space of 60 seconds to take the lead.

Dyson didn’t panic, nor send out the runner, instead he let his group learn from the occasion and fix it themselves.

Fix it they did, as Maribyrnong failed to kick another goal from that moment for another 40 minutes – by then the game was already won.

“They sort of knew what to do,” he said.

“I think they were aware that they let themselves down in that moment; to write the ship and get one and still go in at half time up was really important for us.

“I think the year 12s and the mature heads in the group certainly played a big part in that moment in the game.”

The final siren meant for an extremely successful day for Parade, taking home the Shield in both the Senior and Intermediate Boys.

Dyson says the reason this group is so special is their unwavering bond for one another.

“I touched on it after the game, (it’s) the want to play school footy, a lot of them have commitments outside of school footy,” he said.

“A lot of guys don’t play school footy because of their studies and want to put that ahead of it, but we have a group now that wants to buy in.

“They’re really close and they want to play for each other, you can really see that they’re a really close team.

“For a group that only plays seven games together, the bond they’ve got is really strong.”

Top prospect Nate Caddy was awarded best afield for his two-goal display.

With Caddy among Parade’s best were Sam Sheard, Christian Mardini, Liam Farrar and Angus Smith.

For Maribrynong, Lucca Greggo and Lucas Impey were very impactful at stages, while Christian Olivieri kicked multiple goals.

Parade has clinched the first of a possible two Herald Sun Shield premierships with a nail-biting win over Rowville in the Intermediate Boys final.

Rowville was nine points in arrears at the final change before kicking within four points.

A succession of five minor scores for Parade eventually pushed the score beyond a straight kick, 5.10 (40) to 5.3 (33).

Smooth-moving midfielder-forward Sebastian Murphy was named best afield for his two goal performance.

Closely following Murphy was athletic ruckman Tyrone Uwanda, who flew at the contest all day.

Uwanda comes from a basketball background and is unlinked from a Coates Talent League club.

A Sophie McKay-inspired Melbourne Girls Grammar has clinched a stunning upset over heavy-favourites Caulfield Grammar.

The 6.5 (41) to 3.8 (26) victory for Melbourne is Caulfield’s first loss in the girl’s system in six years.

McKay, daughter of ex-Carlton player Andrew and current AFLW-Blue Abbey, was comfortably the most damaging player at Sandringham’s Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

She kicked Melbourne’s first before her second came in a crucial third-term, where her side kicked three unanswered goals.

Forward Mikayla Berto kicked the other two majors during the third quarter.

As expected, the Fields came back late – closing within 16 points and completely owning possession in the final quarter – but the deficit ultimately proved too great.

McKay was awarded the best afield medal.

In the intermediate boys, Rowville will look to get the better of Parade and complete a fairytale run having had the toughest run to the decider.

The team coached by Essendon premiership player Darren Bewick started its campaign in the play-off game.

“We’re really excited about the chance we’ve got,” he said.

“Having had some teams involved in the Herald Sun Shield in the past few years, the kids are excited about continuing to grow our presence.

“It’s another fantastic opportunity for our players to test themselves and improve.”

Lachie Dovaston looms as a key player for Rowville having enjoyed a standout performance in the first two games.

He was named in the All-Australian side at the recent under-16 national championships.

“He’s coming along very nicely,” Bewick said.

“Like all of our players, we’re trying to teach them good habits they can hold when they got up to a higher level.”

Meanwhile, Maribyrnong College will be looking to make a piece of school history when it competes in the Division 1 final for the first time.

Standing in their way is an impressive Parade side who put on a show in the semi-finals.

“Hopefully we can match the standard Parade set,” Maribyrnong College’s Martin Walsh said.

“Getting to play against the best is something our boys are really excited by. We’re a pretty young group with only a handful of year 12 students.

“The best part of having them is they’re not going to fear any challenge and will give it their best.”
