Replay: Western Jets v GWV Rebels - AFL Coates Talent League Round 16 (Girls)

The Western Jets have claimed their win of the season with a powerful 45-point win over the GWV Rebels.

A dominant second quarter provided a platform for the 8.4 (52) to 0.7 (7) win.

Despite their scoring power at one end, the Jets were able to make the most of their opportunities with the midfield dominating.

The back six defended like their lives mattered in keeping the visitors goalless at Werribee’s Avalon Airport Oval.

DOMINANT GRIEVES

Sierra Grieves was dominant in the middle of the ground for the Jets, finding plenty of the footy throughout the afternoon. She was able to do it on the inside and outside, often breaking through at the front of stoppages. The Yarraville Seddon junior played for Vic Metro this season and you’d expect she’s going to be right in the AFLW Draft mix later this year. A brilliant run of play in the last quarter involving five Grieves bounces down the wing almost set up one of the goals of the season.

DIAB THE IGNITER

After a goalless opening term, where the two sides traded behinds, Mira Diab proved to be the igniter for the Jets’ powerful win. Diab kicked two goals in quick succession, the first of the game, to send the home side on their way. Both came after the Caroline Springs junior competed in the ruck. She was in form in front of goal heading into the contest given she kicked eight majors at local level last weekend for the Lakers.

JOHNSTONE IMPRESSIVE

Maggie Johnstone enjoyed a strong afternoon in defence for the Rebels, taking several intercept marks. With the Rebels’ back six under the pump, Johnstone was able to have a strong aerial presence. She was able to hit targets out of defensive 50 to help ease the pressure on her side.

COURAGEOUS DIXSON

Play was stopped late in the second quarter when Jets’ youngster Piper Dixon was helped from the field by the medical staff. Dixon courageously went back with the flight of the ball before a Rebels opponent accidentally collected her in the midriff. There was some confusion when the umpire signaled for play to stop as the Maribyrnong Park product left the ground with the siren sounding early. Once Dixon was off, play continued for another 30-odd seconds.

WHAT’S NEXT

The two sides will play their final game of the home-and-away season next week in Wildcard Round. The Rebels face Geelong Falcons with the Jets doing battle with Eastern Ranges.

PREVIEW

The Rebels will be without a couple of their best players as their wildcard chances go on the line this weekend against the Western Jets.

The chances might be slim for the Rebels to make the wildcard playoffs but the team is looking to end the season on a high with two wins.

The Rebels clash with the Jets will be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV on Sunday from 11am.

The equation is simple for the Rebels, they must win their final two games. Even then, they will be relying on other results to go their way to claw back into finals contention.

The Rebels need to overturn a major percentage deficit on Geelong Falcons, the team they meet in the final round, to leapfrog them into the wildcard play-offs.

“We’re going in these next two games to win,” Rebels coach Sally Riley said.

“In every game you legitimately have a chance to win.

“That’s the thing we instil in the girls, anything is possible.

“It’s always close with the Jets as well and even the (Geelong) Falcons, this will be the fourth time we’ve played them this year, and we’re getting better against them.

“You never know.”

Making matters tough for the Rebels will be the loss of captain Millie Lang and young gun Brook Ward for the clash through injury.

There are also others out with local footy commitments as finals continue for those competitions.

It’s set to impact both the Rebels and Jets with both sides having Ballarat league teams in the finals.

“Brook has done her ankle, Lang has done her ankle and Claire Mahony is managing her ankle, but she’ll play,” Riley revealed.

“There’s quite a few girls who will have to make a choice of either the Western Jets, finals or the Rebels.

“We have a 50/50 split. Some are playing for Bacchus Marsh, others are playing for the Rebels.”

The Rebels will be looking to bounce back from a 70-point loss to Gippsland Power last round.

“The way they moved the ball they are quite quick,” Riley said.

“We were just chasing out tail and our girls were spectators in the end.

“We did have moments to show what we can do.”

Riley points out to the first quarter where the girls had plenty of inside 50s but weren’t able to put it on the scoreboard.

The Rebels coach said their movement inside 50 was a work in progress but it was getting better and will hopefully be improved again on Sunday.

“We’d focused on our entries and getting more reliable entries and locking the ball in,” she said.

“We’ve been working on that and to come out against Gippsland, have more of the play, they were able to apply what we have been learning and practising.

“It was just the finishing touch. We’ve done what we wanted to do but still no reward.

“That’s essentially the story of our season.”
