Andrew Dillon is heading back to where it all began. A 290-gamer with Old Xaverians in the VAFA, the AFL supremo-elect will join the commentary team fior his old club’s clash with Old Brighton on KommunityTV next Saturday. Make sure you tune in.
He might be less than six months out from becoming the next AFL chief executive officer, but next weekend Andrew Dillon could face his toughest task yet.
Dillon will hit the airwaves on KommunityTV on June 17, going back to his roots as an amateur footballer to join the commentary team for the Old Xaverians clash with rivals Old Brighton.
The AFL CEO-elect played 290 games across his career with Old Xaverians, and was one of only four players to play in all of their six-straight premierships between 1995-2000.
Dillon is a life member of the club and returned to be an assistant coach with their Premier Mens side in 2011-12.

VAFA chief executive officer Jason Reddick said it was an exciting time for community and amateur footballers, with the man set to run the game at the elite level still heavily embedded in his community roots.
“(Dillon) has got a lifelong connection to community football and amateur football in particular,” Reddick said.
“His father was the ex-president of the amateurs, he was also president of De La Salle, that was Andrew’s upbringing. He also obviously had his own success as a footballer in the amateurs.
“We are proud as an organisation to see one of our own go through the ranks and reach the pinnacle of football in this country.
“We also feel he still has a great connection with community football. He has grown so much, but he has never lost touch with the common footballer.”
While there will be plenty of war stories told of his years in the VAFA trenches, the special guest commentary stint also doubles as one of Dillon’s first public appearances since being appointed the long-awaited successor for Gill McLachlan.
While it might be his first real foray into the commentary booth, Reddick was adamant Dillon would come prepared.
There was only one slight concern the VAFA CEO had ahead of next week’s game.
“I am a bit concerned he might be a bit parochial. He is not going to give a lot of love to Old Brighton,” Reddick said.
“He knows his footy and he is passionate about the game. He will be authentic and give his views, and I really think he will have a lot to add to the coverage.
“He definitely would have done his homework, you don’t get to become AFL CEO without being prepared.”
