Sam Kerr has no chill.
The Matildas captain is stealing the show in the much-maligned Netflix documentary surrounding the United States Women’s National Team’s 2023 World Cup trainwreck.
Kerr features in one episode where she travels to the United States to meet fiancee Kristie Mewis’ extended family for the first time.
The documentary ‘Under Pressure’ was released on Tuesday and was supposed to be a behind the curtain story of the most dominant nation in women’s football chasing a third straight World Cup crown – having won it all in 2015 and 2019.
Instead, it all went horribly wrong and the knives came out even before they were knocked out of the tournament.
It explains why Mewis and Kerr feature so prominently early in the series with footage showing the pair all loved up when reuniting before the USWNT’s final squad was announced for the World Cup in Australia.
Having finished her WSL season with Chelsea, Kerr visited Mewis’ sister, Sam Mewis, in Massachusetts for the episode and was not shy when speaking with her future in-laws.
One particular moment is making fans giggle with Kerr sledging Mewis about her Gotham FC team’s defensive record that season.
“Did you know you guys have conceded eight goals this year, four off set pieces, corners to be exact?” Kerr said during what appears to be a family lunch gathering.
“That’s horrific. Half your goals come off corners. Do youse not work on it?”
“I’m joking, I’m joking. It has nothing to do with you!” Kerr said.
“You were front post, if you’d jumped a little bit higher it wouldn’t have got to the middle of the goal. I’m joking, it had nothing to do with you.”
One of Mewis’ family members, referred to as Pat, laughed: “That was an attack, that was cruel.”
The documentary also gives several glimpses into the cute, playful way Kerr and Mewis act around each other.
“Sam, she’s just like the best person ever,” Mewis said.
“I feel like everybody says that about their partner, but I just feel so lucky that she likes me.
“Sometimes I feel I have impostor syndrome and I’m like, how is she choosing me? How am I good enough for her?”
Mewis also drops a big hint about the couple’s future, admitting they are both over the “long-distance” part of their relationship – suggesting one of them will have to move countries to be together.
Mewis stayed in Australia for the remainder of the World Cup to cheer Kerr on despite her team’s nightmare elimination.
A few months later, the couple announced they were engaged.
But they kept the news secret for several weeks and eventually confirmed Kerr had put a ring on it just two weeks after the Matildas’ World Cup campaign finished.
Tongues had been wagging since an Instagram post of Mewis wearing what looked very much like an engagement ring emerged in mid-September.
But the pair kept it quiet, playing a game with fans as they refused to confirm the news until Mewis broke the couple’s silence on November 9 in an exclusive interview with People Magazine.
In the interview, Mewis confirmed the engagement for the first time and revealed how supporting Kerr had been after the US were knocked out in the quarterfinal stage of the Women’s World Cup.
“My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain, all of my crazy antics,” Mewis said.
It was also a few days before Kerr’s 30th birthday, which the couple spent together in the US.
Kerr and Mewis went public with their relationship in 2021 after the Tokyo Olympics and since then the power couple have regularly shared snaps together.
“We’re not private people,” Kerr told Gaffer. “I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”
Kerr added that it was important to her to be with someone who understood the demands of football, particularly when they play on the opposite sides of the world.
Mewis added: “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives, and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me.
“I love to share my relationship on social media.”
